Steamboat or Bust | Day 5 of 30 Days on the Road

3

After the first full night of sleep in a week, it was time to hit the road and get to the mountains; the snowboard jones was killing me. The drive from Boulder to Steamboat is about 3 hours in good weather, and it was great weather. Blue skies and warm sun highlighted the windblown remnants of the Wednesday/Thursday snowstorm, but the roads were dry and we made good time.

The mountains were beautiful, I love this time of year in Colorado, there’s still color in the hills, but the mountains are crisp and white. Loveland was packed, which was great as it made me feel better about not stopping for a few laps (my gear was all in the boat, so riding had to wait one more day).

Coming down from Rabbit Ears Pass into Steamboat is such a great feeling; Steamboat feels more and more like home every year, and rounding that last corner and seeing the mountain always makes me a bit giddy. After a quick stop at the house to drop off luggage, tradition required a stop at Double Z’s for some fries and BBQ sauce, it really is the best.

I rounded out the day by partially unpacking and digging up enough gear to ride at Loveland on Sunday. Somewhat boring day for a blog post, but sometimes you have to get from Point A to Point B; today was that day in between.

“30 Days on the Road” is a blog series tracking my travel for thirty days in October and November; from leaving Alaska on October 27th until Steamboat opens on November 25th. Due to a series of cool opportunities I don’t have to be back at a “real job” until 11/26th, and after a summer that seemed way too long, I’ll be making the most of my free month with as much snow and snow industry fun as I can cram in. The goal is two-fold, first to get you pumped about the upcoming season, and two to help keep track of time as I wander aimlessly for a month.

I’ll also be posting updates on Facebook and Twitter, so make sure and check out the action there too.

Jet Lagging | Day 4 of 30 Days on the Road

3

After the three part blog for Day 3, Day 4 is a breeze. After a quick breakfast at the hotel I caught a shuttle to the airport with a couple of other bloggers. Unlike the travel to Philly, flights were on time, and we actually landed in Denver a little early. The DIA to Boulder bus is super easy, although two unfortunate passengers didn’t realize they couldn’t just leave their bags on the sidewalk and have them magically get on the bus. The bus driver specifically mentioned the bags, announced them on the intercom, and carried one onto the bus to see if anyone would claim it; no one did, so we finally left without the bags. Neither passenger was very happy when they reached their destination and discovered their bags weren’t on the bus. Pro-tip, you have to give your bags to the driver to put on the bus, he’s not going to pick up random bags that are left on the sidewalk – have you not traveled since 9/11?

I spent the rest of the day napping, catching up on the slew of emails that had piled up while I was back East, and planning out the next week’s travel.

Gore Tour: Day 3 of 30 Days on the Road – Part 3

Part 3 is the final part of the Gore Tour section of Day 3 of 30 Days on the Road. About time, as I need to catch up on everything that been going on since then.

I found the Q&A section extremely helpful in forming an overall picture of Gore. This was some of the “big picture” time, stepping back from the focus on the products and looking at Gore as a whole. This was a lot of talking, so fewer pictures in this section. (more…)

From the durability testing room full of washing machines we continued on to what was my favorite part of the tour: the “comfort lab” and the “rain room.” (more…)

Gore Tour: Day 3 of 30 Days on the Road – Part 1

Day 3 of 30 Days on the Road was my second day for Gore, and it was a huge day. There will definitely be some follow-up posts coming out of this trip, but I’ll do my best at capturing the day in Day 3 (which I’ve split into two parts). This was a really cool trip, and I learned a lot; hopefully I can share that with you here. (more…)

Snow and Gore: Day 2 of “30 Days on the Road”

Wednesday 10/28 was day number two of my “30 Days on the Road” blog feature. Check out Airports: Day 1 of 30 Days on the Road if you missed it.

The day started in Boulder at 7 am with a quick check to see if the foot of snow on the ground was going to mess with travel out of Denver. Aside from Frontier cancelling a few flights everything looked good, so at 7:30 am I was out the door and on my way to catch the RTD Skyride bus back to Denver. The bus was thirty minutes late, but given the road conditions that was probably pretty good. (more…)

Unfortunately, the camera cable was busted during travel today, so photos will have to wait until I can find a replacement.

Day 1 started with my plane taking off from the Fairbanks International Airport in AK at 1:10 am on Tuesday 10/27. After a snow-less fall (see Snow, Damnit, Snow), I moved my ticket up to escape the barren north (and to make the trip to Maryland to visit Gore possible). Monday, the day before my flight, the skies finally opened up and dropped several inches of dry fluffy snow in the hills. Figures…

The flight from Fairbanks to Denver (via Seattle) was awesomely uneventful, dropping me in Colorado at 10:30 am. Within hours the skies darkened, turned to rain, and finally snow. I like to think of it as a welcome home present. After a quick stop for lunch at the always essential Illegal Pete’s in Boulder, I killed some time catching up on emails and then hit the pillow, dreaming of powder.

Next up, snow tries to keep me from getting to the Gore Experience More Summit, in Snow and Gore: Day 2 of “30 Days on the Road”

Skiing, So Easy A Robot Can Do It

With the advances in computers, electronics, and robotics over the last couple of years, we’ve seen an increasing number of robots that can actually do something. With examples like the now commonplace Roomba cleaning robot, Honda’s humanoid Asimo running, Murata Boy riding a bike, and this lifelike android talking, it should come as no surprise that robots would one day tackle snow sports.
