Winter returns with more than a foot of new snow at Maine’s tallest resort

CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine – Sugarloaf will open for the 2009-10 winter season at 8:30am Sunday, Nov. 28, after more than a foot of new snow blanketed the resort’s higher elevations on Friday night. The mountain recorded eight inches at the base, and better than 12 inches at the top of SuperQuad, with drifts topping two feet. (more…)

Snowmaking begins at Sugarloaf

Offseason upgrades increase efficiency, provide better early-season snow

CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine – With flurries falling and temps in the low to mid twenties this morning, Sugarloaf began snowmaking operations in preparation for the 2009/10 season. The familiar sound of snowguns echoed through Carrabassett Valley as snowmakers covered the upper section of Tote Road for several hours.

This morning’s snowmaking was a test of the system as Sugarloaf’s snowmakers prepare for a major snowmaking push over the next two weeks in preparation for opening day on Friday, November 20. The resort plans to open with skiing and riding on Tote Road, with lift service on the SuperQuad chairlift. If weather permits, crews are hopeful that they’ll be able add additional trails for opening day as well. (more…)

Sugarloaf to open summit for the weekend

CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine – Thanks to more than two feet of natural snow in the past eight days, plus a revamped and enhanced snowmaking system, guests at Sugarloaf will be skiing and riding from the mountain’s lofty 4,237 foot summit tomorrow, as some of the best early season conditions in the resort’s history continue. The summit will open to skiers and riders a mere two weeks into Sugarloaf’s 2008-09 winter season.

In addition, Sugarloaf has opened a full-size terrain park in the Stomping Grounds, and plans to open terrain in its eastern bowl, pushing its trail count close to 70 for the weekend. Sugarloaf currently features the most open terrain of any resort in the east. (more…)

Sugarloaf To Open For Skiing And Riding On Nov. 21

CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine – Thanks in large part to favorable snowmaking temperatures and offseason upgrades to its snowmaking system, Sugarloaf will kick off the 2008-09 winter season on Friday, November 21. The resort plans to open with skiing and riding on five trails covering 1,750 vertical feet, all serviced by the SuperQuad chairlift.

Offseason enhancements to Sugarloaf’s snowmaking system increased the resort’s snowmaking capacity by more than 20 percent, and allowed for snowmaking on all five opening day trails simultaneously. Upgrades included six new water pumps, 50 new HKD snowguns, 25 new Boyne Low-E Fan guns, and new snowmaking pipe to the summit. (more…)

Sugarloaf and Sunday River introduce new winter vacation savings program

NEWRY and CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine – Good things may come to those who wait, but at Sugarloaf and Sunday River this season, the savings will come to those who make haste.

The resorts have announced a new “Early Savings” program that allows guests to save up to $100 on their winter vacations if they book early in the winter season. The program includes three booking deadlines, and the earlier guests book the more money they can save. Guests can book by October 15, 2008 to save $100, by November 15, 2008 to save $75, or by December 15, 2008 to save $50. The savings are available on ski and stay packages throughout the 2008-2009 winter season for reservations of two nights or longer. (more…)

Sugarloaf to host final stop on 2009 Revolution Tour

CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine – The future of US snowboarding will be on display at Sugarloaf this winter as the nation’s top up and coming riders gather for the fourth and final stop on the 2009 US Snowboarding Revolution Tour, March 9-11. The USSA tour will crown its overall champions for the season at Sugarloaf, and the winners will qualify for a Chevy US Snowboard Grand Prix event the following weekend.

Sugarloaf surpasses 12 feet of snow

CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine – The snow keeps falling at Sugarloaf, where 10 more inches of powder piled up on Wednesday, Feb. 13. Maine’s tallest ski resort has received 153 inches (more than 12 and a half feet) this season, with nearly 3 feet of snow falling this month alone. (more…)
