SIA’s 2011 Women’s Market Intelligence Report Released
Women Influence 80% of Consumer Spending

MCLEAN, Va. (Oct. 11, 2011) – SnowSports Industries America (SIA) is pleased to announce the release of the 2011 Women’s Market Intelligence Report, which provides an in-depth look into women’s spending in the snow sports marketplace. Women are responsible for more than 80% of all consumer spending and despite the fact that more skiers and riders are male, the snow sports market is no exception. Last season women spent a record $941 million on snow sports gear made specifically for them, and had a hand in most other purchasing decisions for their families. SIA breaks all this down and more in the 4th annual edition of the Women’s Snow Sports Market Intelligence Report giving companies an accurate snapshot of what/where/how women were buying in 2011.

“This report is the only place to get women-specific snow sports data including participation, sales, demographics and more,” said SIA Director of Research, Kelly Davis.

Women can be a tough market to crack, but SIA Research has worked hard to pull together this data for companies to better understand the women’s market and adjust brand strategies accordingly. The easy to follow report, including charts and numerical breakdowns, gives companies a competitive edge. Below is a sample of findings in the 2011 Women’s Market Intelligence Report.

2011 Women’s Intelligence Report Highlights:

The top-selling ski in 2010/11 was a women’s ski-the K2 Tru Luv
The typical female snowboarder is between ages 25 and 34
Thirty-four percent of women cross country skiers report household incomes of $100K+
Women’s AT/Randonee boots saw an increase of 214% in unit sales last season
Alpine ski equipment represents 68% of women’s snow sports equipment purchases
Women can fully outfit themselves for skiing or riding for less than $2,000
Snowshoeing brings in the most female participants, making up 46% of the category
Women prefer to shop in specialty shops, where they look for expert advice
The Women’s Market Intelligence is available at no cost to SIA members and $425 for non-members. The 2011 Snow Sports Market Intelligence Report, a wide-ranging report of activity in the snow sports marketplace during the 2010/11 season, is also available. Make sure to look out for the 2011 Juniors Snow Sports Market Intelligence Report, coming soon.

Record snowfalls likely helped lead to record snow sports sales in the 2010/11 season, and SnowSports Industries America (SIA) committed its research team to digging deeper into the data and build a bigger picture of where our industry stands. In their new “State of the Industry” video, SIA has created a “lessons learned” that provides helpful insights into consumer spending habits, demographics, and emerging product categories.

The video is a little cheesy, but well worth a watch if you’re at all interested in the numbers behind our sport. You can watch it and read the press release after the break.

SIA Creates “State of the Industry Video”for the Masses
New Video Breaks Down Lessons Learned from 2010/11 Season

MCLEAN, Va. (Sept. 19, 2011) – The 2010/11 season will go down in history books as a record breaker for both snow sports sales and snowfall across the country. Experts say it will take a little snow magic to experience the same results for this winter, but important lessons can always be learned from studying a banner sales year. Luckily, the SnowSports Industries America (SIA) Research Team has done their homework and boiled it all down in the State of the Industry Video available at: vimeo.com/channels/siasnowsports, providing valuable insight into consumer spending habits, demographics, immerging product categories and more. Videos for Alpine/AT, Snowboard, and Nordic/AT specific categories are also available.

“When you think about it, knowing consumer buying trends can help at every level in our industry – retail staff on the shop floor, sales managers, upper management, entrepreneurs launching a new business – really anyone involved in snow sports should check out this video as they prepare for the upcoming season,” Kelly Davis, Director of Research for SIA.

The State of the Industry Video is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the services and information SIA’s Research Department provides to members, which give them a competitive edge in today’s business arena. SIA’s Research Department offers a full range of research and data reports that provide industry insights to help companies make smarter decisions and ultimately grow their business.

SIA also collects and analyzes all their research, which ensures the information is relevant for the snow sports industry’s unique business needs including budgeting, product development or how to write a business plan. Some of the research featured in the videos is from the 2011 Snow Sports Market Intelligence Report- a wide-ranging report of activity in the snow sports marketplace during the 2010/11 season – which will be remembered for its record breaking sales and highest snowfall levels in twenty years.

As a non-profit, member-owned trade association, SIA’s goal is to help businesses thrive on their own, and as part of the larger snow sports industry. Membership dues help subsidize SIA’s exclusive research making the data available at no cost (i.e.: State of the Industry Video) or at significantly reduced pricing. Additional SIA research reports, including women’s-specific and juniors-specific snow sports products, will be released in the upcoming months.

For questions on SIA research services, please contact Kelly Davis, SIA’s Director of Research at KDavis@snowsports.org or by phone at 703.506.4224.

January 26, 2010 (DENVER, CO) —With an estimated 20,000 attendees packing the Convention Center in Denver for the SnowSports Industries America (SIA) trade show at the end of the month, a movement has emerged to engage more youth in winter sports.

The SIA Snow Show itself highlights some of the latest trends and innovations in the winter sports industry while showcasing the importance of the $3 billion industry to the U.S. and Colorado’s economy. A number of Show attendees, representing manufacturers, retailers, resorts and nonprofits have joined forces with government agencies and politicians to promote the benefits of getting youth involved in winter sports activities.

On Saturday, January 30, member organizations of the burgeoning Recreation Outdoor Initiative (ROI) movement, sponsored by SIA, will host the first National Youth Summit. Member organizations of the ROI currently combine to ensure 50,000 youth are involved in winter sports each season, and the focus will be to double the effort so that one million youth are involved in winter sports by 2020.

Hundreds of Denver students who have participated in winter sports programs will gather at the Colorado Convention Center to listen to speakers discuss the importance of getting more youth in winter sports activities, before departing to enjoy the day skiing and snowboarding at Copper Mountain and Keystone Resort.

Speakers for the Youth Summit include former and current heads of SIA and National Ski Areas Association, who will discuss efforts by manufacturers, retailers and resorts to get kids in winter sports. All speakers and high profile attendees will be made available for questions by the media following the event.

In addition to raising awareness on the importance of getting kids into winter sports, the Youth Summit serves as a celebratory capstone for sixteen states that declared January “Learn a Snow Sport Month.”
