Sick Airness Hits NYC with Burton’s Standing Sideways Premiere

Burton Snowboards hit NYC last night for the big apple premiere of their new movie, Standing Sideways. The snowboard company’s latest flick proved to be a crowd pleaser as more than 1,000 fans and snowboarders showed up to see it on the big screen at SantosParty House.

The night was filled with non-stop action, with the Burton team kicking things off with a signing at the Burton Flagship Store in Soho. Terje Haakonsen, Mark Sollors, Mikey Rencz, Kazuhiro Kokubo, Danny Davis, Jack Mitrani, Mark McMorris, Mikkel Bang, Jussi Oksanen and Ethan Deiss were all on deck there to meet fans, take photos and sign autographs.

From there it was go-time, with the premiere of the movie at Santos. With a packed and raucous house, the screening was even more amplified by the film’s killer sound track which boomed on the club’s legendary audio system. After the movie, it was on with Holy Ghost! taking center stage as the start of what would be an insane musical lineup that also featured Roofeeo (TV on the Radio), Uncle Mike, Jasmine Solano and Smoke L.E.S.

Definitely an amazing night all around, and today the team keeps the party going as they head north for the premiere in Toronto.

To get your own copy of Standing Sideways, check out your local snowboard retailer or download it on iTunes

Current Swatch TTR World Tour leader, Mason Aguirre (USA), will not be making an appearance at Stylewars, which will leave the door open for Charles Reid and Sebastien Toutant to take over the top spot. Reid, current World No. 2 on the TTR World Ranking List, will be defending his Grand Master title from the 2008 event and will also be looking to beat out fellow Canadian, Toutant, for the chance to take over the World No. 1 position. Toutant will be tough to take down after his amazing slopestyle win last week at the New Zealand Open, and will be seeking his first Grand Master title and the opportunity to move into World No. 1.

Other riders setup to make moves on the Swatch TTR Ranking List are Eric Willett (USA) and Sage Kotsenburg (USA) looking to move into the Top 5, Danny Kass (USA) who could break into the Top 10 and Marko Grilc (SLO) who could rise into the Top 20.

(Aspen, CO) January 23, 2009 — Judging from the cheering crowds at the base and the overwhelming 110,000 plus text-message votes, there was no question who was the decisive gold medal victor last night at the Winter X Games 13 Big Air Contest, none other than Quiksilver’s own Travis Rice.

In a four man contest, head-to-head format, each rider taking two runs, the Big Air Contest is decided entirely by fans’ text votes. Travis wowed the crowds and cameras with a few signature tricks, some seen in the recent “That’s It That’s All” film, including a ridiculous Double Backflip Backside 1080. With 92% of the votes in Travis’s favor for his first match-up and 78% in the final, fans said Yes to Travis Rice.

“Last night was double-vindication for me,” said Travis Rice. “Last year I was knocked out by Mikkel in the head-to-head format and by Torstein the year before. It feels really good to come back this year and to go up against both of them and come out on top. Many thanks to everyone who voted for me.”

Earlier in the week, Travis suffered a gnarly fall on the treacherous slopestyle course, leaving many to question if he would be able to pull through the Big Air contest. But from the start of the practice runs, it was apparent that Travis could not be stopped, going huge on every hit and not holding an ounce of effort out.

Today Travis will go up against Shaun White, Kevin Pearce and Danny Davis in the Men’s Snowboard Slopestyle elimination round for a spot in Saturday’s final.

Check out video of Travis’ Double Backflip Backside 1080 wearing the Quiksilver Everblast jacket at http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=3853914&categoryid=3850011

PERISHER BLUE, AUSTRALIA (September 3, 2008) – Heavy snow resulting in poor visibility tested competitors today during men’s and women’s slopestyle qualifications at Perisher Blue Resort. Riders from all over the world took on the inclement weather during day three of the Burton Australian Open to earn a place in Friday’s slopestyle finals, alongside some of the world’s best snowboarders including Mikkel Bang, Chas Guldemond, Torstein Horgmo, Mason Aguirre, Kimmy Fasani and Jamie Anderson.

The slopestyle course challenged riders with a variety of features including a down rail, battleship rail, three kickers and a wall ride. Top men’s qualifier, Eric Willett (USA) landed a solid run that started off a front lipslide 270 out on the down rail, followed by a 50/50 gap to front 180, 50/50 out on the battleship, into a switch backside 540 mute, followed by backside 720 melon, finishing with a frontside 900 tailgrab.

“Practice was nice yesterday, but the new snow today made the course really slow. It was definitely a challenge, but it was super fun, the course is really nice and the jumps were well built, said Eric Willett. “Speed was kind of an issue but hopefully it won’t be too bad for Friday’s finals.”

Joining Willett in Friday’s slopestyle finals are Jaako Ruha (FIN), Halldor Helgason (ICE), Andreas Monsberger (AUT) and Markus Malin (FIN), in addition to fellow American, Sage Kotsenburg, who placed first in yesterday’s halfpipe qualifications.

Laurie Currier and Ashley Wendorf, both out of the US will be competing in Friday’s finals against back-to-back slopestyle X-Games gold medalist and New Zealand Open slopestyle winner, Jamie Anderson.

Japan has an air of mystery around the islands that collectively make up the country. It could be the spirits in the trees that house the much sought after powder snowboarders are always searching for. However, the mystery of the 2008 Nissan X-Trail Nippon Open so far has been the weather. After a rough couple days of heavy snow and high winds, the sun finally came out today for the Nippon Open ParkStyle finals at ALTS-Bandai resort.

About Go211.com

Due to the heavy snowfall and high winds competitors saw early in the week, both the men’s and women’s ParkStyle semifinals and finals were held back-to-back for an action packed day of snowboarding. All riders had three runs to get their best score once they made it to the finals with the women taking the course first.

Great Britain’s Jenny Jones had three solid runs with her final effort securing first place with the run of a 50/50 gap to 50/50 boardslide to fakie off the box into a Cab 540 on the kicker followed by a huge frontside air on the hip. Jamie Anderson put together a strong second run starting off with a big gap tailslide to fakie rolling into a Cab720 melon, capping off her run with a stylish nose grab. Representing for Japan, Izumi Amaike saw a return to the podium, repeating her third place finish from last year with a 50/50 gap to 50/50 on the box, mute Cab 540 off the kicker into a frontside air on the hip.

On the men’s side, the riding was even more impressive. With his insane style, making his run look almost too easy, Mikkel Bang claimed the lead early on in the finals with his first run; however it was his second effort that clinched the top spot. Kicking the run off with a gap to switch backside lipslide on the rail to an insanely smooth switch backside 900 mute, Mikkel cleaned up with a stalled out frontside alley oop off the hip. The Nippon Open always promises feats of gravity defying snowboarding and second place finisher Kazuhiro Kokubo did not disappoint with a solid run that included a 50/50 gap to boardslide to fakie, switch frontside 900 melon followed by an insane frontside alley oop corked frontside grab off the hip that could only be described as “freaking huge” by Head Judge Jason Grossi. Jaakko Ruha earned his first Burton Global Open Series podium finish with third place, charging with an impressive 50/50 gap to nosepress on the rail into a 1080 tailgrab over the jump into a backside 720 indy on the hip.

Both Mikkel and Jenny earned $15,000 each for their first place finishes and 8,000 points towards the Burton Global Open Series Championship titles. Jenny’s win bumps her up to third place in the Swatch TTR World Snowboard Tour and Mikkel breaks into the Top 10 standings for the men.

Women’s ParkStyle Final Results:
1. Jenny Jones (GBR) Billabong
2. Jamie Anderson (USA) Salomon
3. Izumi Amaike (JPN) Flow

Men’s ParkStyle Final Results:
1. Mikkel Bang (NOR) Burton
2. Kazuhiro Kokubo (JPN) Burton
3. Jaakko Ruha (FIN) Kissmark

In case you missed today’s Go211.com live webcasts of the men’s and women’s ParkStyle finals, both highlights of the winning runs and the full webcasts will be available for replay and on-demand viewing on Go211.com.
