Denver Catches Sick Airness with Burton’s World Premiere of Standing Sideways

BURLINGTON, VT (September 16, 2011) Last night, sick airness spread through the city of Denver where the global premiere of Burton’s new movie,Standing Sideways took place. The iconic Ogden Theatre was fully packed with over 1,500 snowboarders, shop staff, dealers and friends – all there to enjoy the very first screening of Burton’s latest snowboard film.

Burton team riders Jussi Oksanen, Mark Sollors, Keegan Valaika, Jeremy Jones, Ethan Deiss, Mikey Rencz, Kazuhiro Kokubo, Danny Davis, Jack Mitrani, Mark McMorris, Alex Andrews and Kevin Pearce were all on deck, rolling up in style accompanied by 13 sassy sick airness attendants. After their arrival, the entire team sat down for a serious signing, hooking up photos and autographs for all the attendees.

After that it was show time, and with Mother Nature delivering the first snow in Colorado that day the crowd was especially pumped to watch some great riding and Standing Sideways delivered. From Mark McMorris making snowboard history by landing the first Cab triple cork 12, to Jussi Oksanen crawling out from an avalanche, only to return to the very same spot a few days later to stomp a switch backside 9, the movie is definite entertainment from start to finish. Add in the insane soundtrack and plenty of ‘behind the scenes’ rider antics, and the whole vibe of fun and snowboarding is complete.

“I was stoked to be a part of the world premiere of Standing Sideways,” said Burton team rider Jussi Oksanen. “It has been a while since Burton has created a core movie, and it was great to see the amazing fan reaction to the hard work we put into it. It’s cool to see the variety of riders, styles and locations – there really is something for everyone in this film.”

After plenty of applause, the movie wrapped up and everyone headed over to Casselman’s Bar where a lineup of live bands performed, including EVS, Sammy T, Sunsquabi and Broken Tongues.

Following an awesome night in Denver, the Standing Sideways world tour now begins, with Burton riders hopping on a plane bound for Antwerp, Belgium to kick things off on Saturday, September 17. The movie tour will make its way around Europe, ending in Moscow on Friday, September 30th, and then it heads back to North America for more tour stops from October 5-15. Finally, the tour will wrap up in Japan in late October. A list of confirmed Standing Sideways tour stops is below and additional details about the tour can be found at www.burton.com/movie

Laax, Switzerland – January 15th, 2009: Another spectacular battle ensued today in the Halfpipe at the 6Star Burton European Open. Again, 1000 Swatch TTR ranking points were on offer as well a big part of the total prize purse worth $125,000, motivating riders to up the ante. As in 2008, Kevin Pearce (USA) narrowly snatched victory from Shaun White (USA) moving him up to World No.4 on the Swatch TTR Ranking. White finished the competition in second, the Swiss local and fan’s favourite Iouri Podladtchikov in third. Also Kelly Clark (USA) repeated her victory from 2008 and claimed first place in the women’s Halfpipe battle. She now sits in World No. 9. Kjersti Oestgaard Buaas (NOR) and Paulina Ligocka (POL) took second and third place respectively.

A monster Halfpipe and blue bird conditions proved to be the perfect combination for the riders to lay down mind boggling tricks that pushed Halfpipe progression to unseen levels. 07/08 Swatch TTR World Tour Champion Kevin Pearce was looking to repeat his 2008 BEO Halfpipe victory, boosting large and spinning big with a stalefish to McTwist, followed by back-to-back 10s and a frontside 9. “It’s amazing to win this title a second year in a row and after not performing that well yesterday it’s good to get some TTR points today”, he said. White’s second place finish has put him into TTR World No.12, setting him up well for the rest of the season. Iouri Podladtchikov (SUI) came in third, jumping 26 positions into World No. 21 in the ranking.

Kelly Clark was doing what she does best – impressing the judges with her smooth style and solid tricks. Her winning run consisted of back-to-back 7s followed by back-to-back 5s, with a monster double overhead frontside air to finish it off. She has now moved up to World No.9 and was super stoked on the results “It’s great to do so well at a 6Star event here in Laax. I’ll be at all the big events and if I do well and jump up a few spots in the TTR that would be a great bonus for me”, stated Clark.

As predicted the Swatch TTR rankings now look very different with a number of key movers and shakers. Peetu Piiroinen (FIN) has moved into World No.2, continuing to narrow Chas Guldemond’s lead. Mason Aguirre (USA) stormed into the TTR Top 10 and now sits in World No. 8 while Finnish rider Markus Malin rounds out the TTR Top 5. Danny Davis (USA) and Antti Autti (FIN) performed well over both contests and are now both in the TTR Top 20 (World No. 13 and 14), eager to further improve their rankings.

Jamie Anderson still has some breathing room in Swatch TTR World No.1, however the other ladies are in hot pursuit. Sina Candrian (SUI) is behind her in World No. 2, followed closely by Kara Rennie (CAN) in three and Cheryl Maas (NED) in four. Sarka Pancochova (CZE) continued to climb the ranking today, moving into World No.7. Tailing her are today’s top finishers Kjersti Oestgaard Buaas in World No.8 and Kelly Clark in World No.9.

Season 08/09 is shaping up to the most tightly contested yet, with all the previous Tour Champions and new comers hungry for victory. Log on to www.go211.com to watch the replay from both days of competition and stay tuned to www.ttrworldtour.com for fresh videos, news, blogs, and rankings. The Swatch TTR World Snowboard Tour is building momentum and the race continues January 17th 2009 at the 3Star Protest World Rookie Fest in Livigno, Italy, where the young guns will be looking to impress.

Winter rolled in! All across North America winter white is falling from the sky. Europe shows snow in the forecast as well. This means chairlifts are begining to turn laps, snowmobiles are getting purchased or serviced and the Volcom shreds are in pursuit. The anxious energy is unsettling, especially after peeping one of the many mind numbing shred flicks.

In the latest in snow movie news, Wandering Winterland is 30 minutes of good times, good tunes and great shredding brought to you by your good friends at Veeco Productions. It will be premiering on Dec. 23rd on Fuel TV at 8 pm. Get a load of turbulence, schnitzel, chopsticks and cheeseburgers with members of the Volcom Snow team during the 2008 winter. Join Curtis Ciszek and Zac Marben as they submerge themselves deep within the 30,000 screaming and dancing fans as teammate Kevin Pearce stomps a perfect 1260 winning the coveted Innsbruck Air and Style. A short ride later, Curtis and Zac find bliss riding pow in the Austrian mountains. Zac then hopes a plane with Seth Huot to the North Island of Japan were they get busy in the city and secret zones with translator Ruiki Masuda. Lost bags and a car crash later, Seth and Zac bounce as well as Ruiki who travels west to meet up with tyrant teenagers Tyler Flanagan, Daniel Brown, Johnny Lazzareschi and Dylan Alito ripping the parks around Lake Tahoe and Mammoth. In the final segment, learn how to board and no-board in the Canadian Rockies with brothers Erik and Bjorn Leines, Blair Habenicht, guide/mountain goat Shandy Campos and his dog Randy. Check the first teaser here.

Our newest addition to the Pro Team, Gigi Ruf is up to many good things! Art shows, movie premieres, birthday parties and snowboarding. A summer trip to New Zealand allowed him to heli and probe around in the ice fields. So, after 3 video parts and 2 video box covers, Gigi also snakes in on the December Method Magazine cover, along with a 10-page photo story, and has received 2 nominations for the Transworld Rider Poll Awards: Rider of the Year and Standout of the Year. Gigi is also selling his Defender jeep, know anyone interested?

Bjorn Leines sent in a text high up in a tree stand out in Minnesota. As soon as he gets his deer, he’s back to SLC slashing the world’s lightest snow with brother Erik Leines. Rumor has them wanting to return to Shandyland in Canada, with terrain like this, you’d foolish not too!

Mark Landvik provided a stomach full laughs and seriously mental riding in “That’s it That’s All”. Right before he bailed for the Europe premieres, Lando swung by Fuel TV for a Daily Habit appearance! He’s been pretty quiet upon his return. He’ll get things fired up in the damp Northwest.

Wille Yli-Luoma is racing cycle-cross in Portland. Apparently, he’s qualified for nationals. He looking to join numerous crews all winter, documenting his travels on snow. Fellow countryman, Eero Niemela is going over the falls on last time in Southern California surf before he moves back to Whistler for the winter.

Seth Huot started an after market Harley fabrication business making custom handle bars. He’s already got a few days of jibbing on his Volcom board. Both Seth and Zac Marben had amazing seasons on the boards. Marben locked into the ender in MDP’s “Down with People”. He’ll be venturing toward the west coast soon, with no particular location set, Marben is letting it flow, landing wherever the snow is good.

Word has it, little man Tyler Flanagan is lapping Mammoth, Johnny Lazzareschi is chasing down people in Tahoe, Zak Stone is working on an International work visa, Curtis Cisczek just purchased a new snow jumper in his home town of Bend, Oregon and is trying to figure out how to load into the back of his truck. Scott Stevens bought himself his first car! Pretty impressive considering he knocked out 3 years of filming with out a whip, he’s relocating to Salt Lake City along with Dan Brisse. The Brisse took the ender in Pirate Productions “Over Seas!” Blair Habenicht broke down his tent by the river, loaded up his girlfriends’ car and transplanted himself as close to Mt. Baker as possible. He joins local boy Lucas Debari as they hunt for big foot in the Northwest.

Pat Moore scored opening part in the new Forum movie with Slayer’s “South of Heaven” to compliment his Slayer pro model snowboard. This part also received a nomination for Video Part of the Year in the 2009 Transworld Rider Poll Awards. He and New Hampshire buddies toured the northwest on annual skate trip and is now in Utah getting pissed. Kevin Pearce, was seen in Mammoth at Tweak Bird show and making laps. He’s trying to figure out where to live this winter.

Aside from raising kids, Terje Haakonsen is playing soccer, baking and gardening. He managed to squeeze in some much needed surf time in Bali and even France, always dropping in on his poor Euro Team manager. He also found time to film last minute in New Zealand, and fly onto the November issue of Method. There have been repeated calls coming in from Miami. Not sure what that means? He’s back in Norway for the dark days before it snows. He’s got all kinds of plans.

Markus Keller got himself a sweet part in Absinthe’s, “Ready”, found himself on the cover of Snowboard US. iPod aka Iouri Podladtchikov, finished school, hurt himself at Freestyle.Ch and has been partying ever since. Naah, the iPod is back, training hard, preparing himself for the Pipealympics and taking over the world! Fillipo: landed yet another sweet part with Mack Dawg’s “People” as well as a part in the Nitro Video. These days, he’s getting ready to go film with the Pirates crew. Arthur Longo, just had a 10-page interview in Onboard, and scored a total of over 4 minutes in the latest Yeahh video Yeahh Love. Arthur will be in Breckenridge all of December, warming up for the winter.

The 2009 Peanut Butter and Rail Jam tour is gearing up to kick off in January and will be our biggest tour to date, with 17 stops and a championship ending in Mammoth. Make sure you check out last years PBRJ tour to get yourself all psyched up and ready for the 2009 tour.

In the wake of a somewhat checkered past, one that conjures up images of broken teeth and lacerated body parts, Austin-by-way-of-Denton, TX Riverboat Gamblers return this coming Spring 2009 with a new album, “Underneath The Owl”. In anticipation of the album’s release Riverboat Gamblers have released the first single, “A Choppy, Yet Sincere Apology” from the new album and encourage fans and casual freeloaders alike to download the DRM-free mp3 from their website as well as the exclusive b-side, “Don’t Jinx” that can’t be found anywhere else. Riverboat Gamblers “Underneath The Owl” was recorded and produced by the “band ruining Famous Hollywood Producer” Mudrock, and will arrive in stores and on line March 10, 2009.

Innsbruck, Austria – December 8th, 2008: The world’s most talented snowboarders will converge inside the Tokyo Dome December 12th-14th, for the legendary Nissan X-Trail Jam. In its ninth year running, this Swatch TTR 6Star event will feature 12 invited pros who will be taking on a selected number of Japanese wildcards in a two-day Big Air and Quarterpipe battle. With a stacked rider list, crazy fans and a unique jam format, the 2008 X-Trail Jam is going to be one for the books.

With this being the first major Swatch TTR 6Star event of the season, riders will be putting it all on the line, looking for a slice of both the 1000 TTR ranking points and the hefty $165 000 USD prize purse. Be on the look out for Chas Guldemond (USA) as he seeks to defend his TTR No.1 position and keep challengers at bay. ” I know there’s a lot of people going for me, Peetu Piiroinen, Kevin Pearce, all the heavy hitters, they’re going to be gunning for it”, he said. Torstein Horgmo (NOR) will be aiming for a top result to catapult him into World No.2, ready to mount a Viking invasion on the recent US dominance of the Tour.

2008 Swatch TTR Champion, Kevin Pearce (USA), is currently sitting at World No.11 and will be chasing a big result in Tokyo. If Kevin can snag a top 10 finish at the X-Trail Jam it will bump him into the TTR Top 6, giving him a jump on his competitors in the chase for back-to-back TTR Tour titles.

Everyone is waiting to see if snowboarding’s favorite son, Travis Rice (USA), who was busy producing ‘That’s It, That’s All’ last season, is going to make some moves and go after the Swatch TTR crown this year. A top 5 finish will launch Travis into the TTR Top 50 giving him a solid start to the season.

The rookie of the contest, Sebastien Toutant (CAN), definitely has a lot to prove and if he can lock in a top 10 finish it will cement him into the TTR Top 20. Another pair of riders not to be discounted are the style kings of Finland, Peetu Piiroinen and Risto Mattila, who will be going for broke all season to ensure a Finnish rider finally breaks the national curse and finishes atop the TTR rankings.

The riders are ready, the tickets are sold and all attention is about to focus on Tokyo. The Nissan X-Trail Jam is going to be setting the pace for this season’s Swatch TTR Tour so stay tuned to ttrworldtour.com for daily coverage with news and videos of the event, updated rankings, stats, and blogs. Also, check out the action from the 6Star Roxy Chicken Jam, the first 6Star event for the Women taking place in Austria at the same time. Following the X-Trail Jam, the TTR Tour takes a break for the holidays, but will be back January 5, 2009, when riders reconvene to battle it out at the 6Star O’Neill Evolution in Davos, Switzerland.

Daily X-Trail Jam coverage begins Thursday, December 11th 2008 only on www.ttrworldtour.com.

VAIL, Colorado – November 10th, 2008: Following a six-year run as one of the top snowboard competitions in the world, the Vail Valley Foundation along with their partner Vail Resorts, announced this week that the 6Star Honda Session at Vail has been canceled for 2008/09.

Kevin Pearce. Photo: Aaron Dodds

For the 08/09 season, the Session had been accredited as a 6Star level event on the Swatch TTR World Snowboard Tour for the first time since its foundation in 2003 because of its high standards, innovativeness, media coverage and popularity among the top level riders on the circuit. “Six years ago, we worked in partnership with the Foundation to create a pro snowboarding event that would help position Vail in the snowboarding world,” says Chris Jarnot, chief operating officer for Vail Resorts. “The Session has done a great job of this and we are proud to have been the host mountain for what is considered one of the best snowboard events in the world”. However, according to the Vail Valley Foundation, costs for the production of the event have increased to a level that could not be fully recovered without running a high risk of a financial loss. “While, we regret having to take these steps, Vail Resorts and the Vail Valley Foundation remain committed to the sport of snowboarding and we are actively working to identify a new winter event that will most likely include snowboarding”, explains John Dakin from Vail Valley Foundation.

The cancellation of the Honda Session at Vail yet means another loss of a 6Star event on the top level of the Swatch TTR World Snowboard Tour, after the recent cancellation of the Air&Style in Munich and the cancellation of the Slopestyle format at the Arctic Challenge in Oslo. “The cancellation of another 6Star event is a setback for the Tour this season but we have already taken all steps necessary to provide the high-level competition environment for riders going after the Tour Champion title that the TTR is known for”, says Reto Lamm, President of the Swatch TTR World Snowboard Tour.

The news from Vail have resulted in another change on the Swatch TTR event calendar with the Burton Canadian Open being rescheduled from December 3–8, 2008 to February 2-8, 2009. “With the Session no longer happening, it frees up a window in the calendar that we have looked at in the past as strategically beneficial to the event,” said Burton Events Director, Liam Griffin.
