02-03 K2 Axon Review
0Everything functions as it should, it looks good, and it has a reasonable price tag.
The Axon, part of K2′s Backcountry Systems line, is the king of this year’s multi-purpose snowboard backpacks. Large enough for expeditions, and small enough for quick hikes, the Axon has all of the features you need for either. There are plenty of straps and tie-downs so you can carry many different accessories, from a board to an ice-axe or shovel. The shoulder straps are well padded, and there is a small cargo pocket on both the left and right waist straps. The top of the bag has a clamshell-like pouch with a waterproof zipper designed for a music player, goggles, or camera, or anything else you might be carrying that should be protected from shock or water, and that you want easy access to. In addition to mountain hiking, I’ve traveled with it and used it as a school pack, and I do not have a single complaint.
02-03 K2 BioSonic Review
0While the speakers do put this pack into more of a novelty classification, the pack holds its own for carrying gear around, and its straps and tie-downs are quite sufficient. It is an all around decent pack, with a few super-cool features.
If you managed to find one of these packs, consider yourself lucky. K2 released the Biosonic for the ’03 season, and then discontinued it for ’04 while they work on redesigning the speakers. That’s right, speakers. K2 built a set of small, flat speakers into the shoulder straps, added a battery pack to power them, and put power and volume buttons on one of the straps. The result isn’t best pack storage capacity or the best sound quality, but man is it ever a cool concept!
It is a smaller pack, so while it will easily hold a couple of extra layers and a few snacks, don’t expect to take it on a major hike. The speakers get pretty loud before distorting, so you can provide the tunes for yourself and your friends on the hill. The pouch for the music player isn’t very convenient, some kind of upper pocket like K2′s Axon has would work, or even better a front pouch on the shoulder strap could easily be big enough to fit a music player without getting in the way.
02-03 K2 Altitude Vent Review
0While many pants quickly loose their surface waterproofing due to sitting, kneeling, and scuffing, the Vent pants didn’t let me down. Like the jacket, the pants have become a integral piece of my outerwear collection.
K2′s Altitude series is nearly flawless. In fact the only thing I would change would be to add a cargo pocket to the pants. Aside from that, the pants function and look excellent. These pants are incredibly waterproof, and what more can you ask from pants? Even after hours of sitting on your bum, these suckers still be prevent seepage. K2 has a real winner with this piece of outerwear.
The pants functioned superbly in all sorts of different weather conditions, maintaining waterproof and breathability over the course of several weeks of reviewing.
02-03 K2 Altitude Vent Review
0The light weight, breathable and highly waterproof jacket is one shell worth investing in.
Decent shells are a dime a dozen, whereas good waterproof, breathable jackets that function in all types of weather are somewhat rare. K2 has nailed it with their Altitude line. Very lightweight and minimalistic, the gear still contains enough bells and whistles to pull you through any kind of weather, but without the bling-bling. I’ve used the jacket in powder, wind, sun, and rain, all with the same level of satisfaction. No matter how wet the snow is, or how much snow you have on you, your inside layers will be dry when you take off your outerwear.
The only thing I could ask for would be a few more pockets, but as K2 makes many other coats with pocket options, and the aim of the Altitude series is more towards lightweight, its hard to complain. The two main front/side pockets are interesting in that they are just space in between the outside waterproof material and the inside quilted layer. At first I thought this weird, but it works well: since there is no pocket material, there is nothing to interrupt the coats breathability. There is also a left shoulder/sleeve pocket for a cell-phone or radio, and a right wrist/sleeve pouch that has a goggle wipe that is velcroed onto an elastic cord. This is an incredible feature, and it functioned perfectly the many times I used it.
Because of its function, this coat will become a mainstay in my outerwear layers.
