Generations, a short film about climate change and winter, viewed by Congress

Boulder, CO (Jan. 29, 2010)—Jeremy Jones, eight-time Big Mountain Snowboarder of the Year visited one of the most world renowned hills in the world, this time without a snowboard. On Wednesday, January 27, Jeremy Jones along with a coalition of winter sport filmmakers and industry representatives shared a new perspective on climate change with lawmakers on Capitol Hill: the economic, social and intangible values of winter.

Jones represented Protect Our Winters (POW), the environmental non-profit he founded in 2007 as a voice for the winter sports community in the climate change discussion. Jones was joined by Chris Steinkamp, Exective Director of POW, Steve Jones, Founder of Teton Gravity Research (TGR), Elysa Hammond, Director of Environmental Stewardship of Clif Bar and Elizabeth Burakowski, Complex Systems Research Center at University of New Hampshire.

The two-day agenda included a screening of Generations, a short film about climate change and winter released this fall by TGR and Protect Our Winters and sponsored by outdoor industry leader, The North Face. Generations discusses climate change through the perspectives of those for whom snowy winters have a deeper personal significance. Featuring ski resort owner [name], climatologist Elizabeth Burakowski, and some of the world’s most accomplished ski and snowboard athletes, the film humanizes and contextualizes the debate on climate change by exploring the intrinsic value of snow to people across generations and cultures.

In addition to the numerous awards won by Generations on the film festival circuit, the film received hearty congressional applause Tuesday evening among a theater of Congressmen, aides, staff and local environmental leaders, after being introduced by Congressman Jared Polis. Following the screening, Jeremy Jones, Steve Jones, Hammond and Steinkamp hosted a Q&A on their experience with climate change in the field and how winter sports enthusiasts everywhere can be part of the climate change solution.

The coalition met with key lawmakers and staff largely from US mountain states who are also leaders on climate change and in key positions on the hill to influence the direction of this issue. Together, they shared their experiences, illustrating first-hand how climate change has had direct effects on the winter sports culture and the $6 billon winter sports industry. Participants included Congressman Jared Polis (D-CO), Representative Peter Welch (D-VT), Congressman Jay Inslee (D-WA), and senior energy and environment staff for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Senator Michael Bennet (D-CO), Senator Max Baucus (D-MT) and Senator Jeff Bingaman (D-NM). The members and staff that the group met with are all key players in the climate and energy debate, most holding senior positions and even chairmanships on the central committees of influence.

The film showing, combined with one-on-one meetings, provided the Capitol Hill community with a fresh perspective of climate change, through the eyes of those on the front lines.

“When we started production of ‘Generations’ with The North Face over a year ago, the goal was to communicate the climate change we all see every day, to as many people as possible. Being here on Capitol Hill a year later, talking with the individuals who are literally deciding how climate change will effect us for generations is one of the most important things I’ve ever done,” said Jeremy Jones.

“The perspective provided by “Generations,” and the teams in the meetings this week, provided valuable and often overlooked component of the climate change debate in Washington,” explained Congressman Jared Polis, (D-CO). “The ski industry is the lifeblood of my district and climate change is already taking a toll,” said Polis. “These athletes are on the front lines of this crisis, watching snow, ice and communities disappear all over the world. In sharing their story with Congress, they are sharing the stories of many communities who are all desperately watching their way of life disappear with the warming planet. While the loss of skiing isn’t the worst consequence of climate change, these individuals show us how we all stand to be personally affected by this global problem.”

###

Protect Our Winters (POW) is a tax exempt, non-profit organization dedicated to reversing the global warming crisis by uniting the winter sports community and focusing efforts towards a common goal of winter preservation. POW was founded in 2007 by Jeremy Jones, a professional snowboarder who is passionate about preserving winter sport industry and culture for current and future generations. Built on the snowsports culture’s inspired dedication to reversing climate change, POW has become an innovative leader in sponsoring effective renewable power, progressive environmental education, and organizing and enabling unique grassroots action. www.protectourwinters.org

Silverton, CO – October 12, 2009 – Venture Snowboards is proud to announce a partnership with Protect Our Winters.

Protect Our Winters (POW) is a non-profit environmental organization formed in 2007 by professional snowboarder Jeremy Jones. The organization’s mission is to reverse the global warming crisis by uniting and mobilizing the winter sports community to have a direct and positive impact on climate change. For the winter 2009/2010 season, Venture will emblazon all its Euphoria powder boards – both solid and split – with the POW logo, and donate a portion of sales from these boards to POW.

In addition, Venture and POW are sponsoring a snowboard graphic contest to increase awareness of environmental issues. Through January 1, 2010, Venture is accepting submissions of artwork that focus on winter, the environment, and activism. The winning design will be incorporated into a run of special edition POW boards for winter 2010/2011.

Working with POW was a natural for Venture’s owners, Klemens and Lisa Branner. Since founding the company in 1999, the husband and wife team have pursued a dual mission: to handcraft superior performance snowboards while minimizing environmental impact. “As snowboarders and outdoors people, we feel compelled to help protect the wild places that inspire us,” says Lisa. “It’s always been a defining part of who we are and how we do business.”

In keeping with this conservation ethic, the company has used only Forest Stewardship Council certified wood for its cores from day one, and converted its entire operation to wind power in 2004. Venture also maintains a membership in the group 1% For The Planet, donating 1% of its sales to environmental causes each year.

The company’s latest efforts include promotion of splitboarding as a clean, human powered recreational pursuit, and the development of a sustainable snowboard factory in Silverton, Colorado. “These are small steps,” explains Klemens, “but we’re moving in the right direction and are always looking for new ways to chip away at the environmental issue, whether that’s through efficiencies in the production process, or collaborating with organizations like POW that are leading the charge with education and awareness.”

“We’re really excited to be partnering with Venture and appreciate their contribution to Protect Our Winters,” says Chris Steinkamp, POW’s Executive Director. “Venture represents a new breed of snowboard manufacturers who realize that design, production and environmental sustainability can co-exist.”

Venture Snowboards is a grassroots manufacturer that has been handcrafting superior performance snowboards from scratch since 1999.

Jackson Hole, WY (Fall 2009) – World-renowned action sports filmmakers Teton Gravity Research is proud to introduce Generations, a short film on the consequences of Climate Change upon winter environments and snow culture. Presented by The North Face in partnership with the non-profit group Protect Our Winters , Generations discusses climate change through the perspectives of those for whom snowy winters have a deeper personal significance. Going beyond charts and numbers, Generations humanizes the debate on climate change by exploring the delicateness of winter and the intrinsic value of snow to people across generations and cultures.

Teaming with Protect Our Winters (POW) and action-sports filmmakers Teton Gravity Research, the film poignantly captures cultural and personal reactions from those to whom mountains and snow represent an irreplaceable way of life.

Founder of POW and professional athlete Jeremy Jones said of the film, “As a professional snowboarder I felt a real need for the debate on global warming to be humanized. It’s my hope that this film draws awareness and action toward a subject that holds dire consequences for an entire culture and sport.”

Teton Gravity Research Co-Founder and film producer Steve Jones also commented, “We constantly do our best to draw attention to issues that are important to our audience and the sports we love. Currently, there is no bigger threat to winter sports than climate change—doing this film with POW and TNF was an amazing opportunity.”

Generations is presented by The North Face and produced by action-sport filmmakers Teton Gravity Research in partnership with the non-profit group Protect Our Winters (POW). Generations will released Winter 09/10. The film’s trailer can be viewed and downloaded on TetonGravity.com, TheNorthFace.com and Protectourwinters.org.

Summer is officially over and even though winter is just around the corner, there is a ton going on in regards to climate change legislation over the next few months.

With the focus being in Copenhagen on December 6th, world leaders will attempt to map out a global climate change policy for the future. The outcome of the conference and decisions made will most certainly set the foundation for how we, as a global community, will attempt to solve climate change and how it effects not only us, but generations behind us.

THE NORTH FACE’S “GENERATIONS”
When The North Face came to us last year with an idea to produce a climate change film with them, we couldn’t wait to get started on such a cool project. With additional help from Clif Bar and teaming up with Teton Gravity Research, we all wanted to create a visual piece that would bring the idea of “climate change” to life, giving the term some real-life context and inspiring everyone to get involved.

Available in October, “Generations” is a short film that discusses climate change through the perspectives of those for whom snowy winters have a deeper personal significance. Going beyond charts and numbers, Generations humanizes the debate on climate change by exploring the fragility of winter and the intrinsic value of snow to people across generations and cultures. The film poignantly captures cultural and personal responses from those to whom mountains and snow represent an irreplaceable way of life, ending with ways for everyone to take part in the solution.

The film will be distributed online, but also premiering at film festivals throughout the winter and made available to all of our supporters to show locally. Keep an eye on our website for details. In the meantime, check out the trailer below.

Film participants include: Jeremy Jones, Sage Cattabriga-Alosa, Seth Morrison, Ingrid Backstrom, Dash Longe, Dr. David Shearer (Climatologist), Ed Stygles (Vermont Farmer), Bill Jenkins (Former Ski Area Owner), Elizabeth Burakowski (Climatologist University of New Hampshire), Randall Osterhuber (Researcher Central Sierra Snow Laboratory), Piere Schropff (Chamonix Mountain Guide) and others.

Check out the trailer:

POW MAKES GRANT TO THE PARK CITY FOUNDATION
Protect Our Winters (POW) made a recent contribution to The Park City Foundation in Park City, UT to help fund the Community Footprint Website, an online resource to sustain Park City’s local, snow based economy and culture by empowering citizens to reduce their water usage and carbon output through an innovative, information sharing community footprint website.

The community carbon and water footprint website allows individuals and organizations to measure their impact on the environment based on their own use of utilities, transportation and other factors. Users will be able to compare their own footprint with neighbors and businesses and will be provided with information and support to help decrease usage and save money. Using the website, citizens and groups will be able to measure how simple actions contribute to the entire community’s reduction. Direct links to local green businesses and government tax incentives and rebates will provide up-to-date and practical information.

“This project is directly in-line with the mission of Protect Our Winters”, said Jeremy Jones, Founder of POW. “We want to support the great work that’s being done locally, providing communities and individuals with the tools and resources to do their part to help fight climate change.”

“Our Community Footprint Website, a partnership between The Park City Foundation and the City of Park City, uniquely provides real data from a user’s utility bill, hyper local information about reduction strategies and a forum to share information and influence neighbors. It will launch at a community event, Save Our Snow II on September 30th” said Trisha Worthington, Executive Director of The Park City Foundation.

ANNOUNCING THE UNION/POW BRANDED BINDING
POW is adding to its growing list of integrated partnerships by partnering with Union Bindings to produce a new binding available at retail now. Partner Logos

Coming out of Union’s Custom House, the new POW Data binding features a baseplate and hiback made of 15% regrind plastic material, originating from Union bindings. The heel cup is 100% recycled aluminium and the EVA pads are made of 100% recycled EVA. Total global production is 290 pairs. Check out Union Bindings’ website

Union will be contributing one-percent of the revenue from this product to POW. So, if you’re in the market for a binding the season, check it out. Not only is it a great product, but you’ll be directly helping us fight climate change in the process.

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE NEXT FEW MONTHS
As already mentioned, the decisions made by our world leaders between now and December in regards to climate change will set the stage how the world is going to deal with climate change and its effects on generations behind us.

As Britain’s PM Gordon Brown said recently, “If we miss this opportunity, there will be no second chance sometime in the future, no later way to undo the catastrophic damage to the environment we will cause,”

Since the US and China are responsible for 40% of the world climate change emissions, every country is going to be looking at the US to see what level of commitment we have, especially after not signing the Kyoto Protocol in 1997.

China is already exhibiting leadership by being an emerging leader on clean energy and placing tangible goals on automotive emissions and green building. China sees the impact that their growing population can have on CO2 emissions and are seemingly ready to be part of the solution.

President Obama is making good on his campaign promise of addressing climate change domestically. At Tuesday’s UN meetings, he said that the US is “determined to act”. As a first step, the US House of Representatives has already signed the US Clean Energy and Security Act and it’s now on its way to the Senate, setting the United States’ first federal mandatory limits on greenhouse gases. Factories, power plants and other sources would be required to cut emissions by 17 percent from 2005 levels by 2020 and by 83 percent by mid-century. But with Congress moving slowly, the United States could soon find itself with little influence when 120 countries convene in Copenhagen.

If the US and China can show domestic commitment and leadership over the next few months, we may have something to build on. With that, countries such as Russia, India as well as the EU will be compelled to follow suit. But there are still many issues to sort out such as addressing the needs to emerging economies in regards to CO2 emissions. For example, do we provide aid to other countries through technology transfer of best practices for energy efficiency and clean energy? How can we compensate countries such as Brazil to stop deforestation? Does a global cap and trade policy make sense?

We could go on for hours. But the main point is that the cost of inaction is much, much greater than the cost of action and the US plays a great role in this. And for POW, we can’t forget that we’re a very large and influential community of people whose long-term lifestyle depends on the outcome of these meetings. We need to voice our concern both locally and at the highest levels. Don’t forget, its up to us to learn as much as we can, to influence others and speak up.

If you’re not a member of POW yet, please consider doing so. Our strength is in our numbers and there is no better time to have a collective voice than now. Together we can Protect Our Winters.

JUST DO THIS ONE THING:
As we lead up to the Climate Conference in Copenhagen from December 6-18, we have a responsibility to let our elected officials know how strongly we feel that an aggressive policy must be agreed upon. For US citizens, please contact them via email here.

Also, read as much as you can. There are tons of articles being written now so just follow us on Twitter (@protectwinters), we’ll keep you updated.

Sandpoint, ID – Schweitzer Mountain Resort announces several initiatives intended to reduce their impact on the environment. Schweitzer hired an environmental coordinator, signed the National Ski Area Association’s Sustainable Slopes Initiative, purchased wind energy to operate several chairlifts, enlisted an environmental committee to work on improvements resort wide, and implemented a contest to see how much energy the resort could save last summer. While recognizing that any ski resort is going to have an impact on the environment, Schweitzer is committed to minimizing theirs to the extent possible.

“It’s important that we in the ski industry recognize the importance of supporting the environment that supports us,” said Tom Chasse, Schweitzer’s President and CEO. “I am glad that we’ve found ways over the last year to take some significant steps to lighten our impact on the environment.”

By signing the Sustainable Slopes Initiative, Schweitzer committed to improving their environmental performance in all aspects of their operations. One step in that direction was to purchase 1000mwh of “Green Tags” which pay for energy to be purchased from regional wind energy producers through a partnership with Northern Lights, Inc. After an assessment of past energy use it was determined that the wind energy credits could be used to completely power Schweitzer’s Basin Express Quad, Great Escape Quad and Lakeview Triple chairlifts for the entire 08-09 winter season.

“Not only is Schweitzer able to reduce our energy consumption by buying the green tags, but also we reduced our energy consumption in August and September by 27% through a resort wide energy challenge,” said Kerri Kuntz, Schweitzer’s environmental coordinator. “It’s really cool to see people from every department on the mountain come together as an environmental committee and come up with great ideas to implement resort wide.”

The committee is working to improve recycling, reduce energy use, improve land use practices, provide transportation options, and increase guest awareness of ways they can contribute.

About Schweitzer
Schweitzer is nestled in the rugged Selkirk Mountains of the Idaho panhandle and the northwest Rocky Mountains. The resort is well known for its two massive bowls, breathtaking views and amazing gladed terrain. Schweitzer Mountain Resort offers 2900 acres of skiable in bounds terrain. Thousands of additional acres of cat skiing are available off the back of the mountain from the top of The Great Escape Quad. Schweitzer overlooks the town of Sandpoint and Lake Pend Oreille, which are sought out and recognized as destinations for diverse recreation opportunities year-round.

McLean, VA (January 23, 2008) – Representing an industry that relies upon a healthy environment and plenty of SNOW — the SnowSports Industries America (SIA) has always taken environmental sustainability seriously and is dedicated to being an eco-friendly Association. At the upcoming SIA.08 SnowSports Trade Show (Jan 29-Feb 1) held at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas efforts to reduce the snow sports industry’s carbon footprint have been ramped up. We encourage everyone to take advantage of the following initiatives and support the industry’s pledge to be more “green”.

Highlights include:

ECOsource Market Segment Exhibit – Booth V98
New exhibit featuring 80 snow sports products and initiatives that are recyclable, sustainable or made from recycled materials. Reflecting the global initiatives of eco-awareness, this exhibit was concepted, designed and built by Dept. Of Energy from Seattle, WA and SIA, using recycled and sustainable materials. We encourage the snow sports industry to use some of these merchandising and production practices to continue generating environmental awareness and concern for our planet.

Digital Press Room – Booth X84
Sponsored by W.L. Gore, exhibitors’ press kits will be available in a digital format ONLY and accessible via computer terminals located in the Digital Press Room on the Show floor.

Water Stations — FREE Refills
To decrease the number of plastic water bottles being tossed out during the Show, SIA and Sessions will provide one very special water bottle for attendees with an incentive to re-use and refill that bottle throughout the Show. Water stations on the Show floor and Sessions Booth (B63) will provide “FREE” refills. According to Jon Rucker, a green building consultant, if every attendee uses just one water bottle for the week, we can prevent the unnecessary use of approximately 117,000 bottles.

SnowSports Institute Seminar – Green Your Business
Alison Gannett, President of Save Our Snow Foundation and a global cooling consultant, will be on hand to discuss how to “green” your snow sports business — save money and the planet at the same time. Wednesday, January 30, 4-5P. SIA Seminar Center, Booth X99.

GES/Mandalay Bay Services
Carpet, padding and signage will be made from recycled materials. 100% recycled waste receptacles as well as containers for recyclables (plastic, glass, metal) will be located throughout the Show floor and in the lobby area. During move in/out, SIA and GES Exhibitions will recycle cardboard boxes, plastic, paper and other materials deemed recycle-friendly.

Renewable Choice Energy
For the second year in a row, SIA will purchase renewable energy certificates from Renewable Choice Energy — of Boulder, Colorado – in the amount of 225,000kWH for 100% of the electric power used during the SIA.08 SnowSports Trade Show. The purchase will prevent 313,200 pounds of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere. In layman’s terms – this represents the equivalent of NOT driving a car 400,409 miles or effectively taking 27 cars off the road for one year. Enrollment forms for renewable energy certificates that can be used in private homes or businesses will also be available onsite for SIA attendees to sign up.

- SIA -
The SIA.08 SnowSports Trade Show, January 29-February 1, 2008, at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center delivers the largest, most concentrated and authentic trade event in the snow sports industry. Celebrating the family business of snow, the four day show launches the styles, technology, innovation, culture and energy of winter sports presented by close to 1000 brands. Nearly 20,000 industry professionals convene in Las Vegas to engage in business, networking opportunities, parties, seminars and more. Media can log onto www.snowsports.org

We are a community of people who love our winters, and in many cases, it’s how we make our living. So it only makes sense that we unite to do whatever we can to fix the damage that’s being done to the season and lifestyle we love.

Obviously, it’s going to take cooperation on a global scale to address everything from fossil fuel emissions to renewable energy solutions – but if our community harnesses our collective energy and puts forth a focused effort, we can have a direct influence on reversing the damage that’s been done and ensure that winters are here for generations behind us.

TOYOTA’S GREEN BUBBLE BURSTING?
Toyota, one of the greenest car companies in the world, is making an about-face and attempting to derail a bill that would raise the fuel economy standard to 35 mpg by 2020. Please let Toyota know that we desperately need higher fuel economy standards to stop global warming. http://www.toyota.com/about/contact/index.html?s_van=GM_TN_CONTACT

JUST DO THIS ONE THING…
This weekend, do this. Replace every light bulb in your house with an energy saving compact fluorescent bulb (CFB). We’re not going to make some fuzzy math claims about how many cars you’re taking off the road, but it’s clear that this is one of the simplest and most effective things you can to make a huge difference in the amount of fossil fuel electricity you use.

WE COULDN’T HAVE SAID IT ANY BETTER
Read the testimony of Auden Schendler, Aspen Ski Company’s Executive Director, Community and Environmental Responsibility to the U.S. Government. If you weren’t sure how climate change is affecting our lifestyle, please read this: http://www.aspensnowmass.com/environment/images/ASC_House_Climate_Testimony.pdf

HELP US HELP THE CLIMATE
When you’re out this winter, do us a favor and look around the resort to see how they’re addressing climate change. Since ski resorts use a huge amount of energy (especially in light winters) it’s important that they do everything they can to mitigate their energy usage. Tell them you’re a POW member and ask why they’re not doing more. Let us know too – we want to know which resorts are making a true commitment.

ABOUT POW
Protect Our Winters (POW) is a tax exempt, non-profit organization dedicated to reversing the global warming crisis, with a direct focus on the winter sports community. POW’s mission is to unite the winter sports community and focus our collective efforts towards a common goal. We focus on initiatives to help change consumer habits and provide funds for renewable energy projects that reduce the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Please join us in the fight against climate change – and help reverse its effects on our winter climates. Together we can Protect Our Winters.

WINTERGREEN, Va., October 19, 2007 – As part of its ongoing initiative to be energy efficient and environmentally responsible, Wintergreen Resort has purchased renewable energy credits (RECs) from Renewable Choice Energy that will significantly offset its consumption during the next year. An REC purchase guarantees the amount of electricity the resort uses is replaced onto the power grid with renewable electricity.

“In effect, we are counterbalancing electricity used for three ski lifts,” said Jay Roberts, Vice President, Mountain Operations at Wintergreen Resort, which encompasses 11,000 acres of Virginia’s famed Blue Ridge Mountain range. “This is just one of many steps we are taking toward a shift to a more ‘green culture.’ We have made strides with our automated snow-making process, which saves on water consumption and kilowatt hours, and will continue to make those kinds of changes throughout the resort.”

Wintergreen Resort is purchasing 791,652 kilowatt hours (kWh) of RECs in the next year from various sources that include wind, biomass and low-impact hydroelectric. These clean resources generate electricity without producing carbon dioxide or other harmful pollutants. Based on a national average emissions rate, Wintergreen’s green power purchase is estimated to be equivalent to avoiding the emissions of 107,653 pounds of coal, or reducing car mileage by 1.2 million miles.

Wintergreen Resort is keenly sensitive to the delicate balance between nature and development, and the resort has long been a champion of preserving the natural beauty of its surroundings. Since its inception, Wintergreen has carefully considered its growth, and continues to work in concert with The Wintergreen Nature Foundation, a non-profit organization that shares the common goal of preserving and protecting the Blue Ridge Mountains.

“Our primary mission is to provide our guests with extraordinary vacation experiences in the spectacular setting of the Blue Ridge Mountains,” Roberts noted. “While committed to that goal, we accept our role as stewards of our natural environment and will remain a leader within the travel industry in responsible energy management.”

Wintergreen Resort is an 11,000-acre, four-season resort located in the Blue Ridge Mountains southwest of Charlottesville, Virginia. This beautiful hideaway is the ultimate vacation and conference spot for all seasons, with more than 300 condominium-style accommodations, a full-service, destination spa, 40,000 square feet of meeting and event space, and many savory dining options.

A ski resort in the winter and cool mountain paradise in the summer, Wintergreen offers year-round golf at the 36-hole Rees Jones-designed Stoney Creek Golf Course and an award-winning tennis program that also remains in full swing with indoor and outdoor courts.

The resort is located adjacent to the Blue Ridge Parkway in beautiful Central Virginia near Charlottesville, just 90 minutes from Richmond, Va., three hours from Washington, D.C. and Raleigh, N.C., five and a half hours from Philadelphia, Pa. and eight hours from Atlanta, Ga.
