Subaru Rally Team USA and Ken Block Tackle Rally New Zealand

0

(Sept 1, 2008) Subaru Rally Team USA driver Ken Block and co-driver Alex Gelsomino have finished their debut event in the hotly contested Production World Rally Championship (PWRC) at the Repco Rally New Zealand this weekend. The duo drove their Subaru Impreza WRX STI to a 13th overall finish among the 24 PWRC entrants. New Zealand was anything but easy for Block who struggled to get accustomed to the Group N specification Subaru which differs greatly from his Open Class Subaru used in the Rally America National Championship.

Maggie riding powder at Keystone during WWSRA On Snow Demo

08-09 On Snow Demos at Keystone, CO

Snowboarder Guide just spent a blustery two days testing 08-09 equipment at the WWSRA on-snow event in Keystone, CO. Strong winds and blowing snow didn’t stop me from getting on some of the boards I have been interested in riding. Unfortunately, due to time and weather, I completely missed several companies. The boards I chose to ride were based either on my own interest or on feedback I had heard from fellow shredders that invoked in me a specific curiosity about certain boards. (more…)

05-06 DC Spectrum Review

Add the jacket and you have a tight set of outerwear, the kind that includes all the features I would have included had I designed the set. I am already looking for my next pair.

I am just as impressed with the pants as I am with the jacket. I probably wore these snowpants 100 days and by the end of the season they were pretty beat up but still relatively waterproof. I used them for instructing as well as riding and there was convenience in the number and availability of pockets. I like that there are pockets that you can access like normal side pockets, but there are also some that are angled down so that you can access them easily when sitting (like on the lift). There is also an inside little pocket for valuables. They are great alone or in combination with the jacket.

The pants are the same soft, black outer material (mine are black with blue trim) as the coat, while the inside is mesh and a thin rip-stop material combo. The pants’ cut is very slimming in addition to the fact that they are black. The butt is lined with a little extra protection, which is always nice. The waist is padded with neoprene and they are adjustable. They are very wind proof and highly waterproof.

05-06 DC Storm Review

There are a lot of quality jackets out there for the consumer to sift through. Price is definitely an indicator of quality and the style and look of a jacket will certainly play a factor in the decision making process. In a nutshell, I think that the DC Storm has a fairly simple design, is made of quality durable fabric, and has a number of functional features. If you like the look and can cough up the money, I believe you won’t be disappointed with the DC Storm jacket.

A good jacket is definitely one of, if not the most, key essentials to your comfort and appearance when getting equipped for the winter season. Of course everyone wants something that is functional, comfortable, and especially durable. I’ve had jackets that got big tears in them as well as jackets that have had seams that fall apart or even jackets that just get completely soaked due to ineffective waterproofing. It is certainly frustrating to have these issues with such a crucial piece of your snowboarding apparel but there are certainly products out there that are designed to withstand all these things. The DC Storm jacket is one of these products.

This jacket has a fairly simple design but has a lot of features that contribute to its functionality. First of all, it is made entirely of Exotex 20,000 fabric which has a real sturdy feel to it and is truly waterproof. I really like the vent system it has as well. Instead of just having armpit vents the Storm has both front and back vents (chest and middle back) that will allow air to actually circulate through the jacket on a hot day. Of course it does have more of the standard features as well, such as a clear pass holder on the sleeve, stretch hand gaiters, and a powder skirt that has snap attachments for connecting to various snow pants. The jacket also has large zipper tabs that are conveniently located and make one handed mitten zipping easy.

This jacket has a pretty simple look. It’s a solid color and doesn’t have any special patterns or color schemes.

The DC Storm is around $260 which is a chunk of change but as we all have heard, “you get what you pay for.” Also it’s a lot better in my opinion to buy a nice jacket that will last a few seasons, rather than something cheap that will have inferior waterproofing or will get torn up easier and will require you to buy again the next season.

05-06 DC Monroe Review

I really like the appearance, size, and the ease of getting these boots on and off, but the amount of cusion in the footbed could be better.

I love the appearance of the Monroe. They have a skate shoe appearance and are so compact they almost look like a shoe. They offer the same boa technology that the women’s Judge offers and also have a foot-bed that you can put heater packs into to keep your feet warm. The footbed feature is nice but, besides making your feet warmer, it detracts from the boots’ comfort. The foot-beds are stiff and not very cushiony, which isn’t the end of the world, but in a long day of riding comfort on the mountain makes a difference in those last few hours that you keep pushing yourself or go in to put your feet up. The higher price reflects the quality of the boot, but until the footbeds are more comfortable they are a bit pricy.

Everywhere but the footbed is super comfortable, with a really nice gel liner that has tough lateral support. The liner is just as high tech as the boot and the two work well together. Because you can successfully tighten the boot (after they are broken in, which takes awhile), I don’t think the Judge’s air pump system would make this boot much better unless you really want to have an extra boost of ankle support control.

The boots are stiff and made for narrow feet. I would suggest trying these boots on as they run small. The boa is nice but is going to be more preferable to some than others. Outside a ski lodge I was talking to a friend and she was telling me she can only wear DC boots because she has such big calf muscles from snowboarding that she needs the ability to loosen her boots when on the lift. It is the quick ease of pressure control that makes the boa such a great addition to the boot.
