“With Burton Rail Days, we wanted to bring a legitimate exhibition of urban riding to the center of Tokyo,” said Greg Dacyshyn, Chief Creative Officer at Burton Snowboards. “Roppongi Hills Arena is an iconic destination in Tokyo, and seeing this urban center transformed into a full winter festival with music, kids snowboard lessons and a world-class rail competition was incredible. It was a next-level event and everyone from the riders to the crowd had an amazing time.”

In the end, it was Jamie Nicholls from Great Britain who won the entire event with two super strong runs: one that included a frontside boardslide 270 out on the down rail and another run that included a frontside boardslide change-up boardslide on the down rail. Dylan Alito came in second place with a frontside boardslide on the ledge and a second run that included a hardway frontside 270 frontside boardslide on the ledge. Ethan Deiss claimed third place with a frontside 180 switch nosepress and a second run that included a frontside 270 frontside boardslide to fakie – both on the down rail. And Shoma earned fourth place with a transfer 50-50 on the kink rail in one run and a transfer boardslide on the kink rail in his other high-scoring run.

Jamie Nicholls had this to say about his win, “When they announced that I won, I honestly couldn’t believe it, especially because there were so many amazing riders there and everyone smashed it,” said Jamie. “The crowd was amazing – let’s just say that I love Japan, Tokyo and everyone there.”

Burton Rail Days Announces Official Results from Tokyo’s Biggest Rail Event

BURLINGTON, VT (November 23, 2011) — This past weekend, top international snowboarders like Ethan Deiss, Dylan Alito, Zak Hale, Stevie Bell, Alex Andrews and Jamie Nicholls took their rail skills to the streets of Tokyo for the first ever Burton Rail Days competition at the Roppongi Hills Arena. Presented by MINI, Burton Rail Days drew the largest crowd ever recorded at the venue, with over 3,000 people packed around the rail set-up to watch some of the world’s best street snowboarders in action.

The rail jam competition kicked off with a total of 17 riders competing in a 45-minute jam format for eight spots in the knock-out round. Once the eight best riders made the cut, the action heated up with riders competing in a head-to-head format.

When the finals got underway, the field was narrowed down to Jamie Nicholls, Dylan Alito, Ethan Deiss and Shoma Takao. Jamie and Dylan went head-to-head to battle for first and second place, while Ethan and Shoma went head-to-head to duke it out for third and fourth place. Each rider had three chances to pull off his best runs.

The riders definitely shared Jamie’s thoughts on competing in Japan and were all super happy to be in Tokyo with a good crew. After the competition wrapped up, the record-breaking crowd all stayed for a free concert by one of Japan’s favorite artists, MINMI, who is known for her diverse skills and artistry as a singer, songwriter and performer.

The event will start with 16 top invited riders throwing down on the biggest rail feature ever constructed for a snowboard event in Tokyo. Built by the world’s leading snow park and halfpipe designers, Snow Park Technologies, the Burton Rail Days course is designed to look like an actual street corner, complete with street lamps, stairs, handrails, a brick façade and a mailbox to session. There’s also a quarterpipe at the top of the stair set for riders to drop in from, and urban features like cement ledges give the riders plenty of room to get creative.

“I’m super stoked to head over to Tokyo for the Burton Rail Days event,” said Burton team rider Ethan Deiss. “I’ve seen a few drawings of the set up, and it looks really solid. Just hanging out in Tokyo is so much fun, let alone getting to snowboard in the city and compete in a rail contest. It’s going to get crazy.”

If your kids are looking to hone their jedi skills this winter, look no further. Burton Snowboards and Lucasfilm just announced their limited edition Star Wars™ licensed collab board and gear for the 2012 season. The collaboration includes a full line of Star Wars themed Chopper mini snowboards, and best of all, an R2D2 helmet.

I think this helmet is long overdue. We’ve had just about every other possible helmet graphic, and lets be honest, who doesn’t want an R2D2 helmet? While you probably can’t get a kids XXXXL to fit your big melon, you can grab one for your favorite grom. The Avid is a year-round helmet, certified for use on snow, or while biking or skating. Plus, next time ski patrol is chasing your kids, you can just wave your hands, and in your best Alec Guinness voice say: “These are not the groms you’re looking for”

Keep reading, there are more photos and the full press release available after the break.

The limited-edition, youth-sized Chopper boards showcase eight different iconic images from the original Star Wars trilogy, including Yoda, Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker and the original movie poster. The Chopper is Burton’s extra-small board, sized from 80 cm to 130 cm long. The three smallest sizes in the series come complete with grippy foot pads and the Riglet Board Reel accessory, so parents can tow their youngest rippers around until they’re ready to rock bindings.

Burton Snowboards and Lucasfilm Bring the Force to the Mountain with Limited Edition Star Wars™ Snowboards and Youth Helmet
BURLINGTON, VT (November 7, 2011) Burton Snowboards and Lucasfilm have come together this winter to bring Star Wars™ snowboard gear to groms everywhere. Just in time for the holidays, Burton is offering a super limited run of two new youth snowboarding products inspired by Star Wars, including a RED youth helmet called the ‘Avid Grom R2-D2’ and a limited edition series of Chopper Star Wars™ snowboards for kids.
The Force is definitely with the new Avid Grom R2-D2 helmet, which is designed after everyone’s favorite droid sidekick, and features a lightweight in-molded polycarbonate shell. The collectible new RED helmet also includes the Spin Fit System that allows riders to easily adjust the fit and helmet’s circumference. Other standard features include Airvanced Ventilation™ to customize venting and a goggle gasket to keep goggles in place. Little groms can impersonate the classic Star Wars character both on and off the mountain since the helmet can be worn on snow, for skateboarding or on bike rides. Available in limited quantities starting November 15th in Burton Flagship stores and snowboard shops around the globe, the helmet is the perfect gift for Star Wars fans.

Available now is the series of limited-edition, youth-sized Chopper snowboards that showcase eight different iconic images from the original Star Wars trilogy, including Yoda, Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker and the original movie poster. The Chopper Star Wars™ youth snowboards come in small sizes that range from 80 cm to 130 cm long. Offering the softest flex possible and lifted edges all the way around, the Chopper allows even the lightest riders to master balance and board control. In addition, the three smallest sizes in the series come complete with grippy foot pads and the Riglet Board Reel accessory, so parents can tow their youngest rippers around until they’re ready to rock bindings.
The Chopper Star Wars™ board series is available now for a suggested retail price of $189.95 each. The Avid Grom R2-D2 Helmet is arriving in stores in mid-November with a suggested retail price of $99.95. Both are available in super limited quantities at Burton Flagship stores and local dealers worldwide.

Sick Airness Hits NYC with Burton’s Standing Sideways Premiere

Burton Snowboards hit NYC last night for the big apple premiere of their new movie, Standing Sideways. The snowboard company’s latest flick proved to be a crowd pleaser as more than 1,000 fans and snowboarders showed up to see it on the big screen at SantosParty House.

The night was filled with non-stop action, with the Burton team kicking things off with a signing at the Burton Flagship Store in Soho. Terje Haakonsen, Mark Sollors, Mikey Rencz, Kazuhiro Kokubo, Danny Davis, Jack Mitrani, Mark McMorris, Mikkel Bang, Jussi Oksanen and Ethan Deiss were all on deck there to meet fans, take photos and sign autographs.

From there it was go-time, with the premiere of the movie at Santos. With a packed and raucous house, the screening was even more amplified by the film’s killer sound track which boomed on the club’s legendary audio system. After the movie, it was on with Holy Ghost! taking center stage as the start of what would be an insane musical lineup that also featured Roofeeo (TV on the Radio), Uncle Mike, Jasmine Solano and Smoke L.E.S.

Definitely an amazing night all around, and today the team keeps the party going as they head north for the premiere in Toronto.

To get your own copy of Standing Sideways, check out your local snowboard retailer or download it on iTunes

From 686′s Levis to Union Bindings many offerings, I love a good collab; and Burton’s nailed it with this one. I grew up in Alaska, raised on the philosophy that a good pair of Carhartts was one of the essentials in life. When I first learned to snowboard it was in Carhartts pants and Sorel boots. I still have a pair of Carhartt work pants, and I still have good mud boots, but it’s been a long time since I’ve ridden in them.

Burton tried this a year or two ago, and it flopped pretty badly – mostly because they just slapped the Carhartt label on a generic set of outerwear. I’m stoked they did it right this year:

The Burton x Carhartt WIP jacket is based off of one of Carhartt’s most popular and rugged designs, aptly called the Traditional. For this project, the special co-branded edition is constructed from a double layer GORE-TEX® Performance Oxford shell featuring fully taped seams protected by 13 mm GORE-SEAM® tape. Further, the authentic work style cut of the Traditional has also been modified, to create a better streetwear silhouette and overall snowboard fit. Other design features include a removable contour hood and corduroy detailing, as well as chest and hand warmer pockets.

The Burton x Carhartt WIP pant is modelled after Carhartt’s classic Single Knee pant, also slightly modified by the collective design team for a better snowboard meets streetwear fit. Fabrication on the pant is also second to none, featuring the double layer GORE-TEX® Performance Oxford shell and GORE-TEX® taped seams. The Burton x Carhartt WIP jacket and pant can be connected via a removable waist gaiter with jacket-to-pant interface for added protection. Both pieces are offered with Burton’s lifetime guarantee.

And if you really want that classic 80s grunge snowboarder look, you can combo it up with the 2012 Ox boot.

Anon Optics Introduces New Goggles & Digital Tools for 2012

BURLINGTON, VT (October 6, 2011) For over ten years, anon optics has created progressive goggle styles that give snowboarders a clear perspective of the mountain. Now for winter 2012, anon is pleased to expand its collection to include two brand new goggle sizes/styles: the large-framed Comrade and the youth-specific Tracker.

First up is the Comrade, which features the largest profile frame in the line. With a frame height of 101 mm, the Comrade provides a huge viewing area, making it easier to see it all and send it into orbit. In addition to its large size, the Comrade’s Spherical Lens mimics the curvature of the human eye for superior optics in all directions. Available in 23 different frame color and lens tint styles, the Comrade is the top choice of anon pro riders likeBode Merrill, Johnnie Paxson and Nic Sauve.

While the new Comrade is the largest frame in the anon line, the all new youth-specific Tracker goggle is the smallest. With a frame height of 83 mm, the Tracker is an ideal goggle style for kids. Lightweight and durable, theTracker also features full perimeter channel venting for clear, fog-free vision in every condition. Kid-friendly colorways like ‘Rasta’, ‘Guts N Glory’, ‘Cupcake’ and ‘Wild Rumpus’ give groms plenty of options when it comes to choosing their favorite Tracker style.

To showcase the entire 2012 anon goggle line, the brand created two new digital tools: the re-designed anonoptics.com (live now) and an updated version of the anon app (coming this fall). The new anon website features more video content and product discovery tools than ever before, giving users a super dynamic way to explore the brand’s diverse goggle line. Anonoptics.com also offers an exciting new feature called ‘Color Bomb’, which lets users sort goggle styles by color. The new Color Bomb feature will also be available on anon’s updated iPhone app called ‘Look Better, See Better’, which was announced this week and will be available later this fall.

Also updated on the re-designed website is anon’s exclusive Lens Visualizer tool, which now features new video content so riders can watch point-of-view footage of someone riding powder, pipe or park through different anon goggle lens tints. This first-of-its-kind interactive tool is only available from anon and allows users to virtually experience what the mountain looks like through different goggle lenses.

To check out the entire 2012 anon line, head to www.anonoptics.com where users can get to know the product, the team, and download the current anon app for iPhone and iPad users. Also be sure to check out the anon video at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6kxhzMC_DRc

Denver Catches Sick Airness with Burton’s World Premiere of Standing Sideways

BURLINGTON, VT (September 16, 2011) Last night, sick airness spread through the city of Denver where the global premiere of Burton’s new movie,Standing Sideways took place. The iconic Ogden Theatre was fully packed with over 1,500 snowboarders, shop staff, dealers and friends – all there to enjoy the very first screening of Burton’s latest snowboard film.

Burton team riders Jussi Oksanen, Mark Sollors, Keegan Valaika, Jeremy Jones, Ethan Deiss, Mikey Rencz, Kazuhiro Kokubo, Danny Davis, Jack Mitrani, Mark McMorris, Alex Andrews and Kevin Pearce were all on deck, rolling up in style accompanied by 13 sassy sick airness attendants. After their arrival, the entire team sat down for a serious signing, hooking up photos and autographs for all the attendees.

After that it was show time, and with Mother Nature delivering the first snow in Colorado that day the crowd was especially pumped to watch some great riding and Standing Sideways delivered. From Mark McMorris making snowboard history by landing the first Cab triple cork 12, to Jussi Oksanen crawling out from an avalanche, only to return to the very same spot a few days later to stomp a switch backside 9, the movie is definite entertainment from start to finish. Add in the insane soundtrack and plenty of ‘behind the scenes’ rider antics, and the whole vibe of fun and snowboarding is complete.

“I was stoked to be a part of the world premiere of Standing Sideways,” said Burton team rider Jussi Oksanen. “It has been a while since Burton has created a core movie, and it was great to see the amazing fan reaction to the hard work we put into it. It’s cool to see the variety of riders, styles and locations – there really is something for everyone in this film.”
