Gloves & Mittens
09-10 Burton Power Stretch Liner Review
0Great glove for any time you need dexterous fingers – for example: teaching, taking photos, or pickpocketing.
The Power Stretch Liner Glove isn’t the one glove to rule them all, but is a great under glove for riders who need their hands free. I primarily picked them up for photography, with the intention to wear a thin glove or mitt over them.
The gloves are actually a thin fleece shell, and as such are not waterproof; they are however pretty warm on their own.
The palm is called the Sticky Icky Grip Palm, and it is super sticky, giving you a good grip on whatever it is your holding.
07-08 Burton Approach Undermitt Review
0These Burton Approach under mitts are like an oven for your hands and what makes them even better…? Its like two for the price of one!
I have yet to find a pair of mitts that top the Burton Approach Under Mitt. I'm a mitten addict, there is just something about my fingers being warm, cozy all snuggled together and the fact that I just look so darn cute in them! The under mitt is designed to slip under your sleeves not over like most. I got these mitts at the start of the 2008 season and have wore them riding ever since. My fingers never get cold! I love that when my fingers have to venture out, once they are slid back in the under mitt they instantly warm up. This mitt offers a removable fleece lined glove that attaches by Velcro (no more losing the liner glove) to the top of the mitt. If my hands get to warm I just slip out the gloves (tuck them away in my pocket) and wear the shell. I own them in the ever so cool gray plaid! Wish I had ordered two pair!
One not so great feature is the Neoprene Stretch Zones covering the palm and thumb area. This material has suffered some damage and is pretty tore up from holding my board and throwing grabs. Once Burton puts some tougher material there these mitts will be magnificent!
06-07 Burton Combo Mitt Review
0The Combo Mitt is the new standard in mitten style and warmth.
I have been on a search for three years to replace the Smartwool mittens I had that never let my hands get cold. Shredded into pieces, the Smartwool gloves ran out of life so I decided to try the Combo Mitt. My fingers are always freezing and finding these has made life a lot more comfortable again. They are the perfect substitution and a way better product in terms of looks.
They are some of the most beautiful gloves I have ever seen; their appearance is what fist drew me to them. The cuff can be long and folded down, as in the picture. But it also folds up for a bit of flair- without sacrificing any warmth. Fringing the cuff and inside the mitten is a soft wooly material that I have never seen used as a liner before. The colors these come in are really new and different. It makes these gloves seem not like an afterthought to your outfit, but the main attraction.
06-07 Dakine Cougar Review
0DaKine makes great product, I have been very happy with the performance of this glove.
The Cougar gloves keep your hands dry, not clammy. The exterior fabric is leather, providing an awesome grip for tightening your bindings or carrying a snowboard, that does not tear easily. They are waterproof even on the warmest, slushiest of days, while on cold days the soft interior fabric will keep you warm.
06-07 SixSixOne JJ All Mountain Review
0All-in-all, this is a solid glove with everything you need and nothing you don’t.
This is a solid cold-weather backcountry style glove designed by professional snowboarder Jeremy Jones. I was able to test this in several different weather conditions, snowboarding and snowmobiling. Where other gloves ripped apart or failed at the seams, the JJ All mountain kept my hands warm and dry for the duration. With a longer, gauntlet style upper, this glove can be comfortably worn underneath your jacket, or over the top with easy one handed elastic stays.
JJ gave this glove a very basic look, paying close attention to function rather than presentation, and the result is an affordable, functional winter glove that should prove worthy over several seasons.
05-06 Swany AX-1 Tracer Review
0The ultimate test for a product is using it for an extended period of time, which I haven’t had the opportunity to do yet. Although from what I can tell, these gloves would at the very least stand up to one season of heavy abuse. If you like gloves more than mittens, and you only have about $40 to spend then I think the Swany Axiom 1 is one of your top picks.
I’ve always been a mitten man myself. Sharp edges and lots of grabs make for a lot of wear and tear on seams, which are more numerous on gloves. With that said, the material on these gloves seems to be pretty durable and they have designed it with minimal seams. These gloves also have a lot of other features that more expensive gloves have such as the nose wipe, the goggle scraper, and the quality material that makes the difference in how long the gloves last and how comfortable they allow you to be.
I like the pre-curved construction of these gloves. It makes grabbing your board seem all the more natural and easy. The material of the gloves seems very robust and the waterproofing is effective in keeping your hands warm and dry as well. The Axioms also have the quick release wrist strap and the wrist cords that allow you to take the gloves off and still have them attached to your wrists. One thing I don’t like about these is that I can’t fit them over my wrist guards. You could probably get around this problem, if it was an issue for you, by getting the gloves a size bigger than you would normally wear.
Swany does offer this glove in several different color schemes, for those who are trying to match their outfit this is good. For people like me, it doesn’t matter as long as they’re not pink. Besides that, the design and pattern is okay.
These gloves retail online for about $35, which surprised me after having worked in a ski shop in Vail and seeing what they charged for Swany gloves. I am happy to see what appears to be a quality glove at a competitive price. I would definitely consider this a good value for your money.
05-06 Kombi Akimbo – Herakles Review
0If you are looking for a heavy duty warm glove this winter and ride with, or are thinking about riding with wrist guards this is a decent solution, worth checking out.
Any snowboarder who has had a wrist injury in our sport will tell you to buy wrist guards before you do break them. Well, as I have never had a wrist injury I heeded the advice and volunteered to review these. The Herakles is a heavy duty glove designed to keep your hands warm and wrists intact, even in the coldest and nastiest weather. A heavy duty shell comprised of a waterguard material and a leather knuckle give this glove its integrity. The removable thermoplastic wrist guard slips into a pocket on top of the hand so as not to interfere with your grip at all. Other features include a goggle wipe, snot absorbing material to wipe runny noses, and three separate adjusting straps on each glove to create a snug fit.
04-05 Dakine Impala Review
0Though my constantly frozen fingers prefer mittens, these are gloves are surprisingly warm and I wear them all the time. I have been pleased with the way they break in and have held up over time.
Gloves usually do not keep my fingers warm (I prefer mittens) however, I was happily surprised. Made out of Gortex, with a soft fleece inside, I still occasionally get cold fingers when wearing them, but not as much as I do with other gloves I have tried. This pair of gloves has been added to my mitten lineup.
When I first put them on, they seemed very stiff and tight. After a half a day of use, I had the mobility of any pair of well-worn work gloves. The outer material is very tough, with leather lined palms and thumbs (even double layered on some parts), and it is hard to tell they have had any wear and tear after heavy use. But even the leather has broken in to allow better finger movement.
The cuff length is about 2 inches, which is a bit too short so they just barely tighten down over a coat. However, a huge bonus is that they are never wet inside at the end of the day. The are very waterproof and warm.
