“With Burton Rail Days, we wanted to bring a legitimate exhibition of urban riding to the center of Tokyo,” said Greg Dacyshyn, Chief Creative Officer at Burton Snowboards. “Roppongi Hills Arena is an iconic destination in Tokyo, and seeing this urban center transformed into a full winter festival with music, kids snowboard lessons and a world-class rail competition was incredible. It was a next-level event and everyone from the riders to the crowd had an amazing time.”

In the end, it was Jamie Nicholls from Great Britain who won the entire event with two super strong runs: one that included a frontside boardslide 270 out on the down rail and another run that included a frontside boardslide change-up boardslide on the down rail. Dylan Alito came in second place with a frontside boardslide on the ledge and a second run that included a hardway frontside 270 frontside boardslide on the ledge. Ethan Deiss claimed third place with a frontside 180 switch nosepress and a second run that included a frontside 270 frontside boardslide to fakie – both on the down rail. And Shoma earned fourth place with a transfer 50-50 on the kink rail in one run and a transfer boardslide on the kink rail in his other high-scoring run.

Jamie Nicholls had this to say about his win, “When they announced that I won, I honestly couldn’t believe it, especially because there were so many amazing riders there and everyone smashed it,” said Jamie. “The crowd was amazing – let’s just say that I love Japan, Tokyo and everyone there.”

Burton Rail Days Announces Official Results from Tokyo’s Biggest Rail Event

BURLINGTON, VT (November 23, 2011) — This past weekend, top international snowboarders like Ethan Deiss, Dylan Alito, Zak Hale, Stevie Bell, Alex Andrews and Jamie Nicholls took their rail skills to the streets of Tokyo for the first ever Burton Rail Days competition at the Roppongi Hills Arena. Presented by MINI, Burton Rail Days drew the largest crowd ever recorded at the venue, with over 3,000 people packed around the rail set-up to watch some of the world’s best street snowboarders in action.

The rail jam competition kicked off with a total of 17 riders competing in a 45-minute jam format for eight spots in the knock-out round. Once the eight best riders made the cut, the action heated up with riders competing in a head-to-head format.

When the finals got underway, the field was narrowed down to Jamie Nicholls, Dylan Alito, Ethan Deiss and Shoma Takao. Jamie and Dylan went head-to-head to battle for first and second place, while Ethan and Shoma went head-to-head to duke it out for third and fourth place. Each rider had three chances to pull off his best runs.

The riders definitely shared Jamie’s thoughts on competing in Japan and were all super happy to be in Tokyo with a good crew. After the competition wrapped up, the record-breaking crowd all stayed for a free concert by one of Japan’s favorite artists, MINMI, who is known for her diverse skills and artistry as a singer, songwriter and performer.

“The Art of FLIGHT” Soundtrack Now Available Online

From the intro through the credits, the music featured in “The Art of FLIGHT” is now available online through http://artofflightmovie.com/store/en_us/. “The Art of FLIGHT” is a new breed of action sports film brought to life by Red Bull Media House, in association with Brain Farm Digital Cinema. Two years in the making, “The Art of FLIGHT” gives iconic snowboarder Travis Rice and friends the opportunity to redefine what is possible in the mountains. Viewers experience the highs, as new tricks are landed and new zones opened, alongside the lows, where avalanches, accidents and wrong-turns strike.

The soundtrack travels alongside the journey from the playful tree bonk and kicker segment shot in Wyoming set to the joyful sounds of The Naked and Famous’ hit song “Young Blood,” to the psychedelic riffs of the Black Angels fueling the Revelstoke spine segment. Sigur Rós, an Icelandic post-rock band, sets up dramatic avalanche footage in British Columbia, while the electronic driven “Ghosts ‘n’ Stuff” (Nero Remix) from Deadmau5 play off of stunning footage shot in Alaska and Album Leaf keys in a soothing introduction to Jackson, WY.

The initial trailer (www.artofflightmovie.com) for “The Art of FLIGHT” featured a specially crafted score created by French musician Anthony Gonzalez, the man behind the electronic dream pop act, M83, and Curt Morgan, the Director of “The Art of FLIGHT.” Morgan and Gonzalez created a new band called The Three Corners of the Earth and placed the track on iTunes after the trailer came out prompting requests for the track to pour in. Morgan plays keys and drums and Gonzalez is on guitar. They recorded the piece for “The Art of FLIGHT” in Morgan’s Jackson, WY studio. Gonzales returns with M83 to set a dreamy stage throughout the film itself with “Intro,” “Outro” and “My Tears are Becoming a Sea ” from Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming, which released in mid-October.

From pulse-pounding beats to melodic instrumentals, The Art of FLIGHT soundtrack crosses musical genres featuring a variety of music from still unknown acts to this year’s breakout performers.

686 recently teamed up with Scion to blow the doors off a xB and convert it to the ultimate snowboard ride, and we’ve got photos and video of this incredible project.

“The 686 Scion Numeric is a dream come true,” says Michael Akira West, president and creative director at 686. “What better way to celebrate our twentieth anniversary by doing something that’s never been done before? Every part of this build has a story and a separate product that it was inspired from. I’m psyched we were able to show it to the world, our way.”

The snow specific tires reflect NB686® snowboarding boots and are branded as New Balance® tires. The top of the car is designed like a Bern® protective carbon fiber helmet, complete with their patented brim technology. The windshield is designed from Dragon’s APX® frameless goggle and offers full peripheral view inside the car. The Sparco® modified seats are inspired from actual Union® team snowboard bindings and are constructed in a high-back cup shaped form. The sound system is engineered and designed by the Skullcandy® team, which used their premiere Aviator headphones as inspiration. GoPro® came in with their POV expertise in visual racing mirrors and interior mapping. Vestal® watches and their ZR-3 Chronograph inspired the custom built time gauges. The devil is in the details and Freewaters® sandals clearly did this in the first ever heated floor mats. BOA® Technology added their “dialed” in fit to the cars heating and cooling system. Recco® Avalanche Rescue systems supplied their sophisticated radar technology on the road and mountain terrain. Blind® skateboards legendary artist, Marc Mckee provided his custom touch to the interior panels. To finalize the winter shred story, 686’s technical textile background pushed manufacturing boundaries by successfully wrapping the world’s first and only fully functional waterproof and breathable snowboarding outerwear vehicle, complete with stitched panels, laser welded seams, waterproof zipper and mesh venting.

686 and Scion Racing Debut “Numeric” Snowboarding Concept Car

LOS ANGELES, CA (November 14, 2011) – 686® and Scion® are pleased to introduce the world’s first and only car solely dedicated to snowboarding, “Numeric”. Built for snowboarders by snowboarders, the car is the caveat in the 20th anniversary celebration for 686.

686 teamed up with Scion Racing® and Spin Imaging® to develop the one-of-a-kind custom winter masterpiece. The Numeric is based off of Scion’s xB model. Never before has a car been re-created, re-developed and re-invigorated in such a unique manner. Each aspect of the build was directly inspired from a product and brand that’s progressively pushed snowboarding to new levels.

Each involved brand brought a unique twist to Numeric’s look.

“The 686 build is incredible,” says Steve Hatanaka, Scion auto show and special events manager, “The collaboration of the action sports lifestyle and automotive is a perfect fit for the Scion brand! The hard work of so many people and brands came together to make it happen, and we are very proud of the outcome. It is one of the most unique cars we’ve done to date and the synergy of the final product is amazing. We look forward to showcasing it during the auto show season, with tuner fans and at the action sports shows around the world.”
The action sports industry will get its first look at the vehicle in the 686 booth at SIA in Denver from January 26-29, 2012.

Sponsors and participants include: 686 technical apparel, Scion Racing, Spin Imaging, MV Designz, Rokform,Roland Sands Designs, Light Force, Skullcandy, New Balance, Freewaters, Motegi Wheels, GoPro, Union Bindings, Cadence Apparel, Dragon Alliance, BOA Technology, Bern Helmets, Vestal Watches, Blind Skateboards, and Recco Avalanche Rescue System.

Burton Rail Days gives the city of Tokyo the rare chance to see some of the world’s best street snowboarders in action at a free outdoor event.

The event will start with 16 top invited riders throwing down on the biggest rail feature ever constructed for a snowboard event in Tokyo. Built by the world’s leading snow park and halfpipe designers, Snow Park Technologies, the Burton Rail Days course is designed to look like an actual street corner, complete with street lamps, stairs, handrails, a brick façade and a mailbox to session. There’s also a quarterpipe at the top of the stair set for riders to drop in from, and urban features like cement ledges give the riders plenty of room to get creative.

“I’m super stoked to head over to Tokyo for the Burton Rail Days event,” said Burton team rider Ethan Deiss. “I’ve seen a few drawings of the set up, and it looks really solid. Just hanging out in Tokyo is so much fun, let alone getting to snowboard in the city and compete in a rail contest. It’s going to get crazy.”
