Ski Area Recreational Opportunity Enhancement Act passes

0

The “Ski Area Recreational Opportunity Enhancement Act” passed the US Senate last week, following its passage by the House of Representatives. The bill affects how the US Forest Service regulates the use of public land by ski resorts and allows for new recreational uses like zip-lines, mountain biking, and ropes courses.

“The passage by the Senate of the Ski Area Recreational Opportunity Enhancement Act marks a major milestone in the ability for ski resort operators across the country to offer appropriate, year-round recreational activities on U.S. Forest Service lands,” said Rob Katz, chairman and chief executive officer of Vail Resorts.

This is a pretty big deal for our mountain communities, and we’d like to offer a personal word of thanks to Senator Mark Udall who championed the bill, Congresswoman DeGette and Congressman Bishop of Utah for helping push it through, and President Obama, who is expected to sign it.

GoPro Hero2 in the box

GoPro ups the ante with the Hero2

0

There’s been a pretty steady stream of news from GoPro this year, first with the LCD and battery BacPacs, and now with a whole new camera, the Hero2.

The Hero2 is a pretty major upgrade, with twice the processing power and a 11 megapixel sensor (that’s twice the image detail for photos). The Hero2 also supports the new Wi-Fi BacPac and Wi-Fi Remote products that will be released later this winter and add support for video remote control from smartphones and computers.

“GoPro created a new category of camera with the HD HERO back in 2009, and it’s gone on to become one of the best selling video cameras in the world,” says Nicholas Woodman, GoPro’s founder and CEO. “With these big shoes to fill, we invested massively in engineering the HD HERO2 to be one of the greatest, most versatile cameras of all time. We think we’ve achieved our goal and we’re very excited to see the content our customers around the world capture and share with their powerful new GoPros.”

Lytro Electric Blue

Lytro “Light Field” camera shoots first, focuses later

0

In what appears to be the next big thing in photography, a company called Lytro has just revealed the details of their new Light Field camera. These cameras capture all the rays of light in a scene, and allow the user to focus after the picture has been taken.

Lytro Electric Blue 425x400 Lytro Light Field camera shoots first, focuses later

The Lytro camera utilizes something called a light field sensor, which captures 11 million light rays of data (or 11 megarays), including the direction of each ray. The light field engine then processes the data into a picture that is displayed in HD quality.

I’ve been following news of this camera for the last couple of months, as the promise of focusing after a picture is taken definitely caught my interest. Eliminating focus time is a good thing for action sports photography, and with the added bonus of being able to choose any focus point, this camera could be a real starter in sports markets.

In addition, this unit is small and sleek, and the aluminum frame should make it pretty rugged. The small display should help with eliminating battery drain in the cold too. This is one I definitely hope to have on snow soon and get a real feel for.

Keep reading for pricing, availability, and some demo photos that you can re-focus live.

“Over the years, we’ve seen that backcountry exploration in the winter months has grown in popularity, and when you’re exploring new zones, having the right gear is essential. But understanding how far you can push the limits can mean the difference between coming home safely or not,” said Aaron Carpenter, vice president of marketing for The North Face. “Our mission is to provide insight on how to stay safe when heading off the beaten path and into the backcountry.”
