November 27, 2008 – Sun Peaks, BC – With snow in the forecast for the next four days, Sun Peaks Resort is working to expand the amount of terrain open to the public. On Friday morning, the 5 Mile run will be open down to the valley, providing 600 vertical metres and over 6km of skiing on Cahilty and 5 Mile.

If you think the person most likely to be involved in an avalanche this winter will be a young hot-dogger who doesn’t know any better, think again.

Albi Sole, program co-ordinator for Public Avalanche Awareness Programs at the University of Calgary Outdoor Centre, has just completed his masters degree research profiling who’s at the highest risk of being involved in an avalanche incident. According to Sole, the most likely subject is a male backcountry skier, 25-29 years old, with a bachelor’s degree or higher and earning about $10,000 over the provincial average. Being accompanied by a woman tends to reduce the risk, while having taken avalanche training does not.   Continue Reading »

Park City, Utah (November 25, 2008) – Park City Mountain Resort opens for the 2008-09 winter season this Friday, November 28, 2008, with PayDay and First Time lifts.

Colder temperatures have finally arrived after warm weather and a lack of precipitation has affected the region for the last two weeks. Park City Mountain Resort’s snowmaking team has been working non-stop to prepare the Resort for opening day. Revelstoke, BC - Revelstoke Mountain Resort (RMR) opens on schedule this Thursday November 27, 2008 for its second season of operation. The Stoke high speed quad chairlift will be running servicing the upper mountain, with downloading on the Upper Revelation Gondola. Revelstoke Mountain Resort has received 117cm of snow to date in the upper alpine and is expecting another 10cm this evening. The last snow fall was Friday November 22nd when approximately 15cm was received. Guests are reminded to ski and ride with caution as early season conditions exist. All visitors to the resort should stay within the ski area boundary and obey all mountain signage. Lift ticket prices for opening day are $49 for adults, $36 for students, seniors and youth and $18 for children. Silverton, CO - It may not feel like winter in the lowlands, but up at 10,400’ (Silverton Mtn base elevation) there is good powder snow and fun skiing. Silverton Mountain opens the ski season Saturday November 29th with all natural snow. The snow conditions are better than last year at this time as more than 3 feet of snow has fallen so far this winter.

The Silverton Mountain ski patrollers were surprised to find powder snow conditions in many locations on the mountain as they started work for the season. Since November has been warm it is great to see winter snow conditions on many of the ski runs.   Continue Reading »
