WINTERGREEN, Va., October 19, 2007 – As part of its ongoing initiative to be energy efficient and environmentally responsible, Wintergreen Resort has purchased renewable energy credits (RECs) from Renewable Choice Energy that will significantly offset its consumption during the next year. An REC purchase guarantees the amount of electricity the resort uses is replaced onto the power grid with renewable electricity.

“In effect, we are counterbalancing electricity used for three ski lifts,” said Jay Roberts, Vice President, Mountain Operations at Wintergreen Resort, which encompasses 11,000 acres of Virginia’s famed Blue Ridge Mountain range. “This is just one of many steps we are taking toward a shift to a more ‘green culture.’ We have made strides with our automated snow-making process, which saves on water consumption and kilowatt hours, and will continue to make those kinds of changes throughout the resort.”

Wintergreen Resort is purchasing 791,652 kilowatt hours (kWh) of RECs in the next year from various sources that include wind, biomass and low-impact hydroelectric. These clean resources generate electricity without producing carbon dioxide or other harmful pollutants. Based on a national average emissions rate, Wintergreen’s green power purchase is estimated to be equivalent to avoiding the emissions of 107,653 pounds of coal, or reducing car mileage by 1.2 million miles.
