SBG: Where we’ve been, where we’re at, where we are going

First SBG Business Card 300x200 SBG: Where weve been, where were at, where we are going

This is the original business card we hit the road with in 1999

I started SBG with two good friends in the fall of 1998 as we prepared to hit the road on a snowboard roadtrip. It’s been more than a decade since I started cobbling together bits of code to make a website that would catalog our trip as we traveled from Alaska into Canada and then down through Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, Utah, and Colorado during what was to be one of the best seasons on record.

We started out as what would later be called a blog

In the years since, Snowboarder Guide has taken a number of forms. We started out as what would later be called a blog, an online journal chronicling the story of three 18-year-olds on the road with the sole mission of snowboarding. The journal turned into reviews, and the resort reviews we wrote and published were some of the first available on the web. Over the next few years we moved into product reviews as well, and before the term blogging had even been coined, we had adopted a web magazine format.

We’ve been as small as two people, and at times had ten contributors. Maggie joined our team, first writing reviews, then articles, and then taking on the role of women’s editor and overseeing the female half of the product world as the industry recognized the need for women’s specific gear. We married in 2001, and celebrated 10 years this year. We’ve traveled all over the US, attended incredible events, hung out with legends and heroes, and made friends throughout the snowboard industry, and along the way we’ve had more powder days than anyone really deserves.  (more…)

Off-Snow Training: Trampolines

0

One of our most commonly asked questions is “How do I prepare for a snowboard or ski vacation?” While there is no easy answer, there are a number of ways you can prepare your body and mind for a trip to the mountains. Off-snow training regiments can benefit riders in many ways, including   conditioning, balance, and freestyle advancement. Snowboarding uses a   diverse set of muscles; creating a work-out plan to keep them all in   shape is no easy feat, considering that many of our guests ride no  more  than 20 days per year. I encourage my clients to train core  snowboard  muscles throughout the year, reducing the dreaded “day 3  burnout” and  making their on-snow experience more enjoyable. There are many ways to keep your body in “snowboard shape” and your mind prepared for the next jump, the important thing is that you find   one that works for you. (more…)

11th Annual TransWorld Riders’ Poll Awards

Friday night went off huge with the 11th Annual Transworld Riders’ Poll Awards at the Fillmore Auditorium in Denver.

After all sorts of shenanigans on Thursday night, the Riders’ Polls went off without a hitch. We arrived a little on the early side, found a booth in the VIP section upstairs (thanks TW Snow!), and settled in with a few drinks. (more…)

Fear and Loathing in Denver

1

SIA is always an intense, all-consuming series of events, but with the move to Denver, the 2010 show became a whole new beast. More floor space meant more brands, and so we found ourselves busier than ever tracking down what’s coming next, and from which company.

After meeting with the hundred or so companies we normally see at SIA, not to mention the after parties, we’re usually pretty wasted. But SIA.10 took it to a whole new level with two days of on-snow demos immediately following the tradeshow.

Over the next few weeks we’ll be rolling out previews from each company we met with, including photos, and mentions of any products that really caught our attention, as well as on-snow previews for select boards, boots, and bindings. For now you can check out this gallery of images, an overview of the entire trip.

30 Days on the Road

10

“30 Days on the Road” is a blog series tracking my travel for thirty days in October and November; from leaving Alaska on October 27th until Steamboat opens on November 25th. Due to a series of cool opportunities I don’t have to be back at a “real job” until 11/26th, and I’ll be making the most of my free month with as much snow and snow industry fun as I can cram in. The goal is two-fold, first to get you pumped about the upcoming season, and two to help keep track of time as I wander for a month.

I’ll also be posting updates on Facebook and Twitter, so make sure and check out the action there too.

Go Deeper: The Jeremy Jones Interview Pt.1

Jeremy Jones is the reigning king of big mountain snowboarding. He’s appeared in countless snowboard films, devouring lines that would have eaten most riders, and he was on the front line of bringing more freestyle moves into big mountain riding. His convictions about reducing the industry’s environmental impact led him to start the non-profit organization Protect Our Winters, he’s on year two of a two-year video project called Deeper, and he’s just resigned from Rossignal to start his own company, Jones Snowboards. We sat down with Jeremy last week to get the scoop on his many projects. (more…)
